Okay...so we have chickens...how hard can a turkey be? Really? DH and I were discussing this tonight.

Wondering if a turkey chick now would be ready for the holidays....I think yes...but need confirmation from experts....

Plan to keep it separate from the chicks...but close...should there be any concerns....

I am partial to Bourbon Red turkeys - to me, they look like a genuine turkey! Any thoughts on the breed....

We live just north of Houston - if anyone knows any good sources for turkey chicks there, point me that way! IDK why, but I trust opinions here more than random Craigslist ads (don't get me wrong, I use it all the time, but input here is like an added bonus - I guess like a referral or recommendation - I know, I have issues, but I'm okay with it:))

I am researching this some...I just loose focus on research so easily! I have the attention span of a gnat!

I guess I just need some outside thoughts on this. DH is all for it, but I know he has no answers. Things sound like a good idea to him, and he gives the ok - then guess who does most of the work? God bless him, he has learned how to work that reverse psychology on me I guess!

INPUT!!! I NEED INPUT! From people that know what they are doing!

A heritage breed started now could be ready by Thanksgiving. A broad-breasted would be quite large by then.

They are not that hard to keep or feed though they ought to have a higher protein feed than what a laying hen can get by on. Young poults are a little harder to get started well than a chick, but nothing that paying attention can't handle.

Bourbon Reds are a popular breed.

.....Alan.

Well. Turkeys are SO sweet, I bet that if you got one you would get to attached and not eat it

I can only guess too but I have a feeling that only female members have a DH. So:

Dumb Husband

Desirable Houseguest

Domestic Hoover

Delicious Hamburger

Or, maybe, Dearest Husband or Darling Husband.

Oh I have a DH! Depending on the day it's either my Darling or Dearest Husband... other times he's my Dumb Husband.

As far as raising turkeys:
we raised them one year when I was in high school and they were fairly easy aside from we lost two to a snow storm. Aparently they aren't smart enough to get out of weather. From that day on we put them up manualy for bad weather. And found the third with his head pulled through the fence. I just imagine seeing a racoon on the outside saying, "Hey, come here. I got a secrete to tell ya..." "no a little closer." *YANK*
One made it to butcher and he was AMAZINGLY yummy.
We're getting some from cackle in june. Better set up this time, with more knowledge and BYC to help, should go better.
