tell me everything you know about coccicodios

Great... came out this morning to find 3 of my Welshsummer chicks dead too, even though they've been kept seperate and when I checked on them last night, they were fine!!!!!!!!
7 chicks dead in 3 days, and I can't get Corid or anything like it unless I do a $48 vet visit (per animal that goes with me) plus of course, they charge for taking blood samples and all sorts of crap, before adding the cost of the medication to it overall. God **** Coccidiosis putting me up the pooper financially now... I can't afford to take them to the vet and go through all of this.
Heartbroken by this, I've never dealt with it before and am just in tears, because I don't have the money to do anything about it. I've been financially screwed for a few weeks now, this was supposed to help me supplement my income, but instead, I am forced to sit and watch them die, or help them along the way rather than letting them die over the course of the day.
:'(
There is a temporary remedy that might help slow it down. I'm sending you a PM.

Cocci is EXTREMELY common in chicks kept in a brooder. Happens all the time. Easily treated if you catch the symptoms early. You can buy Corid through Revival Animal Health or even Amazon.com (who gets it through various places). A 16 oz bottle of liquid is about $20 or so.

Chicks raised by a broody hen who get on soil early really never get coccidiosis. They peck at mama's poop and pick up stuff in small amounts in the soil so they do better than any chicks raised with no contact with soil. In the future, put a small pan of dirt in the brooder with them in their first week of life, let them dustbathe in real dirt. That will help them keep from being overwhelmed by the oocycts in your soil when they get outside later.

Oocycsts can be in their gut when they hatch, too, not just when they hit the soil. Its when their system is taken over by them that you see the signs of cocci. You just need to keep Corid on hand for when you have chicks, just in case.

Wow so chicks can be born w/ Cocci??? I am asking b/c I hatched some eggs from a farm in GA and a day or so after hatch I picked up one of the chicks and it squirted clear liquid out of its mouth??? rear??? not really sure... then it convulsed and flipped over.... I was somehow able to nurse this one back to health but another one of the chicks got very droopy and eventually died.... I could not figure out what the cause was. The one that was the first sick was the biggest strongest chick..... Maybe this is my answer... Born with Cocci?

ok these little ones act like they are starving everytime i give them a little feed. they have bad watery poop. is there something i can feed them that might be better than just the chick starter?

Do they not have free choice food????

For watery poop I have heard feeding them some quick oats (oatmeal) is good..... helps bind the poop ....

well there is so much wtery poop that i didnt want their food to mix up with all that. thats another problem. i dont know what to do about their sleeping and the poop in the area. they dont roost yet so its there.

What bedding are you using in the brooder?? Some people put them on raised wire floor so that their poop falls under them..... Something like pine shavings or sand will absorb the watery poops.....

well when i called the man to buy them he said they were age to go outside. after we got there to pick them up they were still pretty little. i didnt ask him but the look 4 to 5 weeks maybe. i didnt want to do the inside thing again so i really wasnt prepared for little ones inside but what can you do they were so sweet. anyway i have them in a very large storage tub. i am using newspaper for bedding but at night i put some cloth in there for them to cozy up to. how do you do the wire thing that is really what i need right now during this. i was thinking on pine shavings during this.

You can cut a piece of hardware cloth 1/2" probably... just a little larger then the size of your brooder... with equal number of rows excess on each side.... then fold the edges to make the wire a platform.... 1" ??? That way when they poop if should fall down below them.

What are you feeding them??? Are you giving them any vitamins? electrolytes??? ACV??? or yogurt?? Although if your chicks have Coccidia then the Cocci thrives on the protien in the yogurt ... so probiotic powder would be better.
