Title says it all... Just because Leghorns look as attractive as their name suggests. * No offense to leghorn lovers-- opinions are lovely

Have you looked at the different varieties of Leghorns?

My personal favorite Leghorn is the Dark Brown, but that's just me.

Now, in brown egg-layers, I would say the Black Australorp.

My comet matches my leghorns day for day for eggs. The comet is also less flighty than the leghorn. She is tiny like the leghorns, but better personality. . .. .

A Black Australorp holds the title for most eggs laid in a year, however ANY common hatchery breed lays very well, including the following:

Production Reds (people call them Rhode Island Reds though) Black Australorps, Barred Rocks, Sex Links, Buff Orpingtons, and of course, Leghorns.

You really must consider that Leghorns do not just come in white. They also come in buff, dark and light brown, columbian, mottled, black, and even mille fleur.

I have read that the different colored leghorns lay at a noticeble lower rate. . . . . Supposedly the production rate is still good, but less than the white leghorn.

I only have personal expierence with the white leghorn

I.S.A. Browns and other Hendrix/DeKalb super layers will compete with the Leghorn, absolutely!!
Maybe you'd prefer the soft red/buff look and the much more interesting and gentle personality?

Everyone repeats that record set by that solitary Australorp, but realistically, most typical 'Lorps wouldn't come close.
