Tell me the best egg layer that's not a leghorn

my khaki campbell ducks out lay every chicken we have.

LOL! I was thinking of getting a few for baking. I have heard they outlay chickens also. This is really tempting me to add a couple to my flock! They are sooo messy though.

For a while I had one brown leghorn and a few black australorps and buff orps. They all laid basically an egg a day, right through until the second winter. My others have never been quite that consistent. I've also read that the colored leghorns aren't as consistent as the white, but my lone one was.

I have read that the different colored leghorns lay at a noticeble lower rate. . . . . Supposedly the production rate is still good, but less than the white leghorn.

I only have personal expierence with the white leghorn

It honestly depends on the lines. Production Leghorns are going to lay like there's no tomorrow. Exhibition Leghorns are going to show a marked decrease in egg production (exhibition birds are larger than production and with a larger body, there's a lower egg production rate). But when I worked with the Dark Brown and Light Brown Leghorn lines in the lab, both were very good about laying early and laying regularly. There was hardly a day that was missed by the breeder birds.

Historically, RIRs....but my single best and most proliferant layer has been a Black Aussie! If I had to choose only one breed to have and could choose just the one, Black Aussies would be my choice. Beauty, personality, egg production, hardiness, good mothering instincts, good foraging and survival instincts.....BAs are just tops in all those lists.

guess what. i kept a four year old cornish and a one year old leghorn seperate for about a month before a show. and guess which laid more? the cornish! i guess it all depends on the chicken, really. my silkie crosses are pretty good too, when they aren't broody
