Tell me why you keep Roosters...

I want to keep, emphasis on want, roosters because to me they are prettier, add a different dynamic to a flock, and can be some great pets.

My wife said no due to crowing....today through some friends, i got a " no crow 3yr old easter egger roo. He squeaks less loudly then any hens scared clucking!. Hopefully he helps my flock intergrate with my new girls( breeding project time). I also want to have roosters to breed. Silkies make great pets, can't get then locally for good price, need rooster to make good pet ,and high priced silkies. Those are my main reasons i guess.

I first only wanted hens for eggs only. My smart husband said the eggs won't be happy without a rooster. I said eggs are eggs with or without a rooster. He said but they won't be happy. So I went out and got a rooster he said what did you do that for. I said well you wanted happy eggs now you will have them. Lol

Small children and roosters don't mix well. I'd never hold my kids prisoner on their own property due to the possibility of an animal attacking them, roosters gotta go. Day old chicks are a great way to add to a flock, that way you (usually) get all females and don't have to deal with this rooster thing again down the road. Chickens in a backyard flock are meant to be enjoyed, not stressed over.
old, but....wrong thread. And, hope you have learned some animal husbandry.

I would pretend to have eyes on the back of my head for bantams, just always be one step ahead of the pounce. I never kicked just would reach down fast and pick them up when they come over and pretend to eat grain near you. they soon learn they cannot get the jump on you and don't try.
yes. if you fear a 1 to 2 lb bird...um sell chickens and go back in the house. Doh.

Of course there may be the rare surprise in confusion I guess...but have yet to be "attacked" by a home raised (head roo raised) baby. They run to me for treats to call the girls for. Simple. I don't touch or handle them (on the roost I pet sometimes). And Free range...no fuss no muss.

I keep roosters because one showed up & adopted me as its caregiver & the other is the first chicken I've ever hatched & raised. I have to be honest, the rooster that adopted me was my introduction to chickens & this site since I was trying to research as much as I could to make sure he didn't die on me. I was surprised to discover that most of the stuff I found here on roosters was that you should kill them & never keep them around. It was discouraging at first. I'm glad I didn't follow that advice.
