Most of my young childhood we had chickens, ducks, and geese, dogs cats, I had a dove named Ring.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=28502

We moved a lot so I went to a different school almost every year, sometimes two in one year. One of our chicken's name was Speedy Gonzales because she loved to chase us whenever we had food in our hands and we'd run fast. Once my dad brought home a baby buzzard (needed rescuing), he named it Leroy (after my grandpa on my mom's side). We fed it canned dog food and it grew up and liked to steal my sister's p&j sandwiches by landing on her head.
Got my first horse when I was 13. Met my DH at 16, married at 21, children at 22, 26 and 30, I'm now a grandma!
I've had chickens again for the past 10 years or so, never gave up on having a horse, although a couple times I was horseless for a couple years at a time. Just trail riding around my local area, no fancy stuff. Still do not have a horse trailer, and thats sad because most of the trails are gone now and I have to ride on the road, which isn't safe right now because I have a unbroke green horse so, no I am not riding her and I feel sorry for her. Want to send ehr to a trainer or something! I stayed at home with my boys for most of their childhood, went to work when my youngest was in 5th grade. I started with one hour a day but quickly advanced to 7 hour days, all my boys are now grown. 2 still live at home, its great!
I spend a lot of time on BYC, I'm addicted I suppose!
Oh lots of stuff I suppose.
My 28th wedding anniversary is next month!!!!!!!!!

Hello everyone, I'm Dawn.
I don't know how to even sum up who I am, I come from such a crazy background.

I'm 33 y/o 1st generation cuban american. My mother immigrated to the USA in the 50's. I've been married 3 times, 2nd & 3rd to the same man, my DH John Glenn. I/we had a mental, oh what should I call it, mental lapse of SANITY around year 8 and fell into the trap of negative thinking. Gladly, I found my way back to the right path, and quickly, and we're happily together again.

I have a teenage daughter starting high school, you'll see here on here as "LaneKim" we're big Gilmore Girls fans. She's a libra, very balanced, good kid. Has troubles I could relate to my own insanity... why am I insane.. I'll touch on that next..

I was one of those troubled teens... grew up in a broken home of sorts. Abusive & drunk was my father, abusive & hateful was my mother. She was always busy with her show dogs, and he was either not home or beating one of us 5 kids. They haven't changed a WHOLE lot, but they live far away so that helps lessen what few blows I still get as an adult. I was locked up, chained up, held hostage, beaten for sport.. yadda yadda yadda. Sexually abused by brothers, uncles & a friend of the family. I was pretty much dealt a string of family bad luck. The folks dumped me in foster care at age 17 because i was "too much trouble". They were forced to take me back due to the fact that I was aging out of the system soon. I was an honors student, cuz I'm smart as a geek, but couldn't stay out of rebellion long enough to graduate HS. I was expelled Sr. year within the 1st month...

I packed my bag (1 duffel) and headed to Los Angeles by bus. What an adventure that was!!! I slept on the beach, was homeless, etc. But I made it.. got a job, got an apt... got involved with a TOO OLD guy and then got pregnant & married. We stayed together briefly, but he was also abusive & a child molestor. Anyone think it's odd I grew up being abused & molested and then married one? I don't... it's just proof that you do what you know.

We moved around from CA to TX & back again, and back again, and eventually divorced. He is now in prison for child porn, which happened 3 years after I left. I met my NOW husband in LA (louisiana) while learning to fly in a vertical wind tunnel.. he was the "expert" and I the newbie. My daughter, our daugther, fell in love with him right away, and about that time I knew he was the real "one".

Long story shorter... we married, we traveled living between Florida & here in TN. He adopted our daugther officially, finally settled down & bought a foreclosed home 3 years ago and we live happily here in the mountains. My husband didn't THINK he was an animal person, but I am, and he's becoming converted week by week.

I volunteer, boy do I volunteer. I build & sponsor www.jumpforthecause.com, I feed hungry african children with the red cup program, I feed an entire class for 3 months at a time. I donate to the nearby animal shelter and volunteer my time. I drive dogs to be adopted or rescued as part of their rolling rescue program. I intend to open this counties first canine rescue for grump & puppies. I sponsor micro-loans with Kiva.org and other than donating locally to families in need, that's about all the charity I do.

I work from home, been running my own computer business for 7 years now or more out of my house. I consult with other agencies on computer related issues as well, and have lots of affiliate programs that bring in money as well. My husband works as a wind tunnel consultant in the aerodynamics industry, and sets his own schedule MOST of the time.

We fly in wind tunnels, we skydive although not much anymore, we alpine ski and LOVE it. We do everything with the kid of course, except skydive.. she stayed on the ground those times. I guess that's about it...

Who am I? I'm a survivor of many things, and hope for the future. I try to live in the moment, and learn something new everyday. I crave knowledge like others crave chocolate, and I'll only stop when I'm dead.

Well.. I think that's it! As a first time chicken owner, and going in full force, I can say, that I need BYC to help me understand the many dynamics in owning poultry. I have learned a ton here and will continue to do so.

Now.. I gotta go check my 'bator!

We have a ton of chickens now and I have more eggs in the bator. LOL We also have 4 ducks, 3 cats, 3 dogs, 5 horses, and 2 turtles. I grew up on horseback. My mother rode her horse while she was pregnant with me so I blame her for my love of horses. She owned that horse for 26 years and I knew and loved him for 20 of those years. I was in 4-H and FFA where I raised rabbits, showed horses, showed sheep and cattle, and did photography. I went to college and got 2 degrees having to sale all my sheep:( after high school graduation. In high school I was on the livestock team. We had chickens and other poultry at the high school that pretty much became mine as nobody else on the team would take care of them. Then one day some human pests came and killed them all for the fun of it:( and that was the end of high school poultry. It wasn't until this spring when I got chickens of my own as we finally moved out of the city and to the country. It's wonderful not having to board horses at a stable anymore and waking up in the morning to the roosters crowing. And at the moment I am a starving photographer but I am going to have to get at least a part-time job soon as starving photography is not doing as well as I had hoped. By the way, my "Boots" is a photo of the week.

I am so proud. But, the roofers are here so I better get offline for now and make sure all my critters are out of the way.

I'll just say that I'm 23 years old, happily married to my high school sweetheart and we have two gorgeous little boys, Kieran and Declan. We adopted our puppy from the shelter a year ago and she's quickly becoming my best buddy. We were living in town, but decided we'd rather live a more self-sufficient lifestyle. We bought 3.15 acres and a little 700 sq ft farmhouse 3 weeks ago. I was homeschooled for a majority of my high school years, since my parents liked to collect my paychecks. However, while I was at home, I had the opportunity to take 'Wildlife Management'. I hatched any eggs I could get my hands on, since my grandfather was a pheasant breeder that also had chukar, guineas, quail and chickens. I graduated from taxidermy school at 17. Butchering animals isn't a problem for me, so I'm really looking forward to adding rabbits, turkeys, pheasant, quail, ducks and geese to our little farm here.
I found BYC when I was hunting chicken eggs to hatch with my oldest son. We gave the chicks to my sister in law and her kids love them. I'm glad I found all you guys.

You are and always will be welcome!

Ok, I can't say much about myself because I am a minor so..
This is MY first year with poultry.
My mom and dad had chickens when they were younger.
I have 5 hens that are almost at the point of laying.
I have 1 Rooster who is the nicest rooster you will ever meet. He is very skittish because the hens attack him.
I have 4 ducklings which is a lot of work
And last but not least I have 25+ Ringneck pheasant that are devil birds.
My whole family doesn't help me much. Which made it impossible to find a job this summer.
Pretty much it, normal kid life.
