telling which are roosters or hens?

Yes, sometimes a chick will be large compared to its mates, and have bigger feet, and maybe a larger, rooster type comb. I had one such pullet two years ago. She also was a much different color and pattern from the other three. I wasn't sure about her until, one day, the rooster mounted her. That's usually a sign she's fertile and will lay soon.

Usually, the most obvious sign you have a hen is the very pale colored comb and subtle feather color. Look at pictures of roosters and hens of that breed, and get an idea of the coloring to look for.

Take some more photos of the ones you're doubtful about, and make sure to get closeups of head, combs, and wattles, as well as neck and back and wing. Then go post on the Chicken Breeds forum under "What breed or gender is this?" Make sure you mention exactly how old, and what breed they are.

Some real experts hang around that forum and you'll get immediate, accurate evaluations.
