okay so my incubator says 99.5 or 99.6 it goes back and forth but my question is i put a digital thermometer in there and it says 96 so which do i believe my brinsea or the thermometer

Do you have a medical thermometer? Those are generally much more accurate.

And don't expect instant correct results from any thermometer other than an instant-read ear thermometer. Place the thermometer inside the incubator at egg level for 30 minutes or so.

I just went through this, trying to calibrate a hatcher and an incubator. With 6 different thermometers I could not get exactly the same reading on any two. However, I got similar readings on three.

On the three that did not read in the same range, two of them were glass bulb type and I immersed the bulb in a bowl of ice and water and left it there for an hour. One read 40F. One read 26F. Both of those came with the incubators, and I threw them out. The other was a very expensive digital infrared thermometer that I've had for 30 years, when they were in the thousands of dollars, and it read two degrees differently than the AcuTemps I ordered on Amazon.

The AcuTemps matched my thermostat's temperature reading over a variety of temperatures, so I am reasonably sure they are reasonably accurate. I have calibrated my incubator and hatcher controllers to these thermometers.
