There has to be a permanent way of doing that. I am trying to be as cheap as possible with them.

The design is great! I am going to copy it but also try to add an egg catcher and add a mesh for their waste.

What causes it to become damp?

Quail poop and possibly spilled water, I would imagine..
I'm in the process of building my second button cage, but I use wood for it. We get the wood for free from a local store - basically everything that gets damaged or things they have used for displaying products, pallets that don't have standard measurements - everything they can't sell. Only problem is we can't use it as fast as they throw it out, we can hardly get around on the property, wood everywhere ^^

What if it is indoors, and has a wire mesh for the floor? I see it working until decomposition starts.
