Hello,
I am wondering how low of a temperature a 5 week old RIR would be able withstand.
Thank you for your help!

I just had my 5 week olds out in the run, it was 45-50 degrees, the sun was shining, and they were taking dirt baths! Didn't look cold to me! I also have turned off their brooder light (they are inside) for the night when they were 4 weeks old. Do you have just the one chick?

I have 4 chicks and was wondering if they could possibly be ready to go onto my porch if I cover them in a cage with a blanket and a tarp. Then let them out during the day.

I would, but I generally give my chicks less heat than recommended. They will let you know if they're too cold. You could always check on them once or twice the first night. Be sure they have a fresh air source, with those blankets and such, just a bit somewhere.

x2! I think mine will be going out this week as well, you have the same temps as we do!

my chicks have never wanted as much heat as wsa recommended. I just started dropping it early. They are at about 75 right now overall in the bathroom. I think I'm going to shut off the brooder lamp as the bathroom stays very toasty with the heat. They are smart little cookies to know jsut what they need huh?
