Temperature in coop - chilly for chicks!! Worried

I also live in VA and am experiencing similar temperature fluctuations. My chicks went outside at about 4.5 weeks old without a heat lamp. Daytime temps were 90+ and nighttime temps were around 60. They are in a pen that has a roof but only wire for walls (a temporary situation while I finish the coop). On very hot days, I have been putting a frozen water bottle in their water to keep it cool and I check on them frequently. They have been just fine with no signs of illness or distress. I have RIRs and Delawares and I have come to the determination that chicks aren't all that fragile. They are now approaching 6 weeks old and last night the temps dropped into the 50s. They did just fine with no signs of distress.

Consider also that several areas have large numbers of feral chickens. Most are warmer locations such as Florida and Hawaii, but even they experience temperatures in the 50s and below for at least part of the year, but this doesn't have any significant impact on the feral chicken populations. I wouldn't expose itty bitty fuzzbutts to these temps, but after 4 weeks, I think they are pretty hardy in all but the more extreme temperatures.

Hey, Virginia! It's nice to see a neighbor on here! I agree with you about the chicks being hardier than we give them credit for!

It's extremely difficult to get an accurate temperature under a heat lamp. Infrared light heats objects, not air, and thermometers are meant for checking air temperature. This is why their behavior will tell you more than the thermometer.

I used ONE 100W heat lamp at 18" in a draft-free brooder box for 40-degree nights. It was plenty! The air away from the lamp was 40-some degrees and they'd run around and play and then retreat to the light to rest and warm. And really, this is similar to conditions when a hen is raising the chicks.

If the chicks are huddling under the lamp try adding a second lamp. Also how high are they hanging? Maybe lower it a little.

I live in NH as well. My girls are 6 weeks old and have been out in the coop for almost a week now. I have 6 of them and they have no lamp out in the coop and seem just fine. They are active and can't wait to come out and play every morning. Hope I am not doing anything wrong without putting a lamp in there.......

Like i have posted before--I was afraid what I said before--very new to this....But my "girls' r about 3 weeks living about 75 degrees and thriving..Eating Puring Star and Grow..Know still not out of woods..but Im doing my best.... And I LOVE MY GIRLS!!!! I will do whT i Hve in the best of my mind and authority to help any GODS creatures...and I feel I am needed here. So If you need me...I am here

I checked the height of the light and it is about 18" from the floor of the coop - I put a 2nd one in there last night and it was 69 under the light which is where they were all huddled this morning. This temp is perfect for these 4 weekers and makes me feel much better than seeing 58 on the therm!. They are doing great and I want to keep them that way! A couple more weeks until they are fully feathered and then I can relax more when the temps dip into the 40's at night.
