Temperature outside...too cold?

Nope...all the hay bales around here are used for cows and horses. We do sometimes get straw to put in the nestboxes...but wouldn't that cause them to rot?

It was a balmy 40* inside the coop last night. No wind...although I'm sure there was a draft or two coming in through the knots in the wood.

Well if it's been 40 degrees in there I don't think you have anything to worry about.
I use hay in my nest boxes. I'm real freaky about keeping the nest boxes super clean so I change it out every couple of days; whether it needs it or not. Never have a problem with it rotting. My nest boxes are made of heavy duty plastic and have small ventilation holes all around the outside.
Hay bales are really cheap and easily accessible around here, so it was just a thought.
