Hi everyone, I'm currently incubating eggs for the first time, and I'm trying to do it just right. I'm using a homemade incubator, too, so I really want to be careful. Yesterday I made a water wiggler with instructions from this thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/164639/how-to-make-a-water-wiggler-pics . Well, the two thermometers is have in the incubator seem to be agreeing, and read between 99 and 100 most of the time. However, the one in the water wiggler is reading really low! It reads somewhere around 96.6. It's a thermometer made for reptiles, so it's supposed to be accurate to 1.5 degrees. What do I do here? I'm going to test the accuracy of the reptile thermometer by using another thermometer in the water wiggler and seeing what it says. So I guess the question is, if I find that the water wiggler really is reading that low, do I bump the temperature in the incubator up, or do I just leave it as is? Thanks for any help!

I think it will take time for the water to get up to temperature in the wiggler, same as it does in eggs. You didn't state if you have a fan in your incubator or if it is still air type. With a fan you want as close to 99.5 as possible and still air 101. Add another thermometer to wiggler and give it another 12 hours and then decide. Good Luck!

I use the ice method described here https://www.google.com/search?q=cal...:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=fflb

If you have a digital thermometer you can put it in a separate smaller bag beside the ice, do it doesn't get wet.... Try to see how accurate that thermometer for reptiles it (calibrate) and that should help you. It's not uncommon for thermometers and hygrometers to need a frequent calibration. and good luck, if you need a guide for calibrating hygrometers, I think I have one as well. Have a great hatch
