Temperature requirements when gathering eggs.

I have done both and it doesn't seem to make a huge difference. I prefer day 18 though just so I can get them out of the incubator quicker and into the hatcher sooner. I aim for 65% humidity at a minimum during lockdown. Once it gets lower than that I will put water in through the vent hole.

Okay, I won't put in water unless the humidity gets really low until on day 18 when I put water in and try to get it around 60%. Thanks everybody, until now I was very confused about the whole incubation process.

I am sure that everyone who hatches eggs in an incubator has little tips and tricks that they have learned from experience and us newbies eventually will too. We just have to jump in and get our feet wet and try to remember that mistakes are OK as long as we LEARN from them. God Bless You!!!!

Does anybody know if an indoor humidity and temp. monitor would work? Will it be able to stand up to the heat? I couldn't find any hydrometers on Walmart, Tractor Supply, or Menard's website. When I searched "humidity", however, I found a "AcuRite Digital Humidity and Temperature Monitor" for $8.94 at Walmart. I think it might be magnetic so would this effect the hatch? Would this work. How about an "AcuRite Thermometer with Humidity" from Tractor Supply? This one isn't digital.

I use the Acu-Rite one from wal-mart that has a magnet on the back. It works just fine, but I have no way to verify its accuracy.

I used the walmart Acu-right also. You can calibrate this:

Get a coffee cup and put 1/2 cup of table salt in it
Add to the salt in the cup 1/4 cup of water
Put the cup and hygrometer into a plastic bag, a big one. Not a sandwich bag. Seal tightly.
Wait approximately 8-12 hours

The humidity measurement should read 75

If it doesn't adjust appropriately. Mine was 3 degrees off

As far as thermometer/hygrometer, the one from Incubator Warehouse is pretty good at $15. It is smaller than some I've seen. Amazon.com sells their band also. I think many go into hatch day at 60-65 % humidity. If you read through the Easter Hatch thread you can pick up a lot of tips.
