Chapter Four, Part 1: Snap

th

Snap slipped through the dark shadows cast by the conifers around him. He licked at the wounds that split his gray and white fur along the left side. His ribs ached like fire was eating away at his side. Snap frowned as he recalled the day. Everything had been a blur, the elk, the bear, and Flash.
Flash.
Snap's golden eyes became heavy with sadness as he tried to shut out the friendly face of his dead sister. His stomach grumbled and he yearned for the bull elk he had killed earlier. They had been so happy then...until the bear had come. Flash had been an idiot, there was no denying it. But she had been brave to stand up to the starving thing. Brave enough, but not strong enough. One swipe to the head was all it had taken to destroy the lives of both wolves.
But I'm alive, Snap thought, That's all that matters now. Alive and hungry, but still alive.
He missed his family and old pack. Oak, Sotob, Sun, where are you?
His pack had been so close-knit; just his parents and siblings living on a small stretch of land with enough to support them all. When he and Flash had broken off from the rest of the pack...it was like a piece had broken off from his heart.
"Flash..." he whimpered to the hard-packed dirt beneath him, "I miss you..."
Snap closed his eyes and sank to the forest floor, too bloody and wounded to continue. If I go anywhere in my sleep, he thought, I hope it is the past.
*The Dream*

Snap grinned turning towards the young she-wolf beside him. Her gray and Brown pelt flashed in the sunlight as the two raced towards the top of the hill. Weaving through the towering trees, he leaped in front of his sister triumphantly. "I win!" he howled, his voice ringing into the sky.
"By a paw-step!" Flash laughed, her eyes flashing with amusement.
A slimmer black wolf who was their age trotted up. "Flash! Snap! Mom and Dad have been looking for you everywhere. We're going hunting today!"
Flash leaped into the air. "Yes! I'll show them who can hunt better than their brother!"
Snap nipped at her playfully. "Or sister!" he said.
The black wolf turned around. "We're not going anywhere by leaping, Flash, Snap."
"Oh, stop being a bird-head, Oak," Snap chuckled, "You seem to keep forgetting your only eight months old."
"And soon to be our beta!" She growled at both of them.
"Where's Sotob?" Flash asked.
Oak shrugged. "Dunno, I think he went hunting with our parents earlier."
"Let's go find him!" Flash barked. With that she flung herself towards the base of the hill, her paws flying over the ground and barely touching it. Snap smiled at Oak before flying after her, his heart as high as his raised tail.
Snap's eyes shot open. He scrabbled up even though his whole body screamed its protest to him. A new, hostile scent filled his eyes with fear.
He was on someone elses land.

Chapter Four, Part 2: Snow

th

Snow sighed as she trotted back towards the denning site. Spring would be coming and she didn't have a mate yet. If I want to stand a chance at challenging Winter, she thought, I have to have a he-wolf with me who can beat Sky.
Despite her plans, she hadn't ever thought of...well...liking someone else in the pack. She'd been friends with Mists for a while, but he just didn't seem to have the effect on her she knew another male would have. She remembered when she had asked her older sister, Talc, what love felt like.
'Well,' Talc had replied, glancing at her mate, Spark, 'It's almost like...swimming. Or floating, you could say. It's wonderful, really, or it feels that way. If a he-wolf rejects you it's...not pleasant."
Thanks sis, she'd thought to herself, I really feel it now. Really do.
Shaking some dirt off her pelt, she sped up as she moved through the forest. The scents of home and family filled her thoughts. Snow paused as if hit by something from an odd angle. Something wasn't right. Something amiss was filling her with nervous hostility.
She stopped suddenly, trying to identify what the strange smell was coming from. Her eyes flashed as she realized it was another wolf. Great. She flexed her shoulder, which was still injured from the skirmish earlier. Now I have to deal with another useless lone wolf!
Snow sprang forward, her jaws ready to snap any limb in her way. To her dismay the wolf had moved away from her. Now that she was farther from the rest of her pack she could pick up more details about the wolf. It was definitely a male. His scent was mixed with a few other wolves she didn't recognize, but most of them were very faint except for one she-wolf's scent. Snow stiffened, what if the wolf already had a mate?
Her ears pricked forward as she came close enough to hear the wolf's pas steps. The sounds were different from the usual gate of a wolf, telling her the he-wolf was probably limping from an injury.
Death. Snow froze again as a whiff of the scent hit her.The she-wolf this wolf had been with, mate or not his mate, had died recently.
The sound stopped. Snow turned her head and caught a glimpse of the lone wolf. His pelt was riddled with scratches and bites, like he had been in a fight with two different creatures: a wolf and a larger animal like a cougar or bear. His eyes were wide but determined. She noticed he had started towards the border of Emeraldpack land, not the center.
There was something else about him though. The assertive stance he occasionally came to when he paused, the looked he gave to no one that obviously warned he would never submit.
Perfect alpha, Snow thought to herself as something clicked. The perfect he-wolf to be my mate! Love, Talc, it has to be love!
She reminded herself not to run out and say something friendly. He was a trespasser. Even if he would be accepted into the pack he would first have to fight his way up from the lowest ranks. Snow's steps were as soft as she could make them as she prepared to leap.
The wolf stared directly at where she was, his legs tense as if prepared to run.
It was too late.
Snow sprang, the two wolves went rolling with the force of her blow. She heard him yelp as she sank her teeth into the wolf's shoulder, daring him to fight back.
He did. The wolf struggled out of her grasp, blood from a reopened wound on his back staining the ground. Snow opened her mouth to ask him something before a blur of white and gray that was once the intruder crashed both wolves into the dirt.
Snarling and yelping, the two opponents wrestled out of each other's holds. At last Snow managed to tear free of the loner's weak snap and pushed him to the ground with her paws and fangs.
His ears drooped. "Wh-where--"
"You're in MY land," Snow snarled, "And you have three seconds left to tell me what you're doing here before I kill you."
The wolf averted his gaze. His golden eyes were sad and angry. Snow couldn't tell if the anger was directed at her or himself. "I didn't mean to come here..." he gasped without stuttering, "I was just confused because my sister died and I was looking for somewhere--"
"She was your sister?"
He glanced at her. "Yeah, I guess you smelled her. Her name was Flash. Why?"
Snow shifted. "Um, I was just wondering that. Strange how a stronger wolf like...you wouldn't have a pack for...himself."
His hackles smoothed out a bit. "Yeah. I'm guessing your the alpha here..."
She smiled coyly. "Why would you think that?"
"Well, if wolves come much better at fighting than you here a wolf like me wouldn't stand a chance," he said.
"Indeed..." she paused, unable to kill him after having such a short discussion. "I thought when I first saw you that..."
His ears pricked. "That what?"
"Emeraldpack needs a few more hunters for the pups that are coming soon."
"You're saying that I--"
Snow's tail swished lower to the ground. "Come with me."
"Or what?" he gulped.
"I guess I would have to kill you for trespassing, then," she replied.
"But aren't I doing that now?" asked the wolf.
"Not if you're part of Emeraldpack."
...
Snow turned to him as they reached the dens. "Oh, I forgot to ask...what's your name. I'm Snow."
Snap looked at the white she-wolf. She was beautiful, maybe not in the way Snap would have expected when he thought of the word, but still easily admired. Without reason he wanted this wolf to think highly of him. This is a new pack, he thought, A new chance for me. I can't be the stupid, subordinate Snap anymore. Ugh, terrible name, Snap. Maybe...Snapper? Nah, that's stupid too. Storm, maybe, that would be fitting. Or something stronger...a hurricane, a tempest. Yes! That's it! Tempest!
"My name?" he barked, "I'm Tempest."
The pup looked at her mother. "That is a nice name."

The she-wolf shrugged. "I suppose it is, but lies are never good when you're joining a pack. They'll smell it, you know."

"Yes," said the pup, "But Snap is a stupid sounding name for a higher wolf."

"It's better than a lie." The mother laid down.

I had to post this after I read some of the RWTP Original thread. WARNING: This is a HUGE spoiler for part 1 of the story.

"My father is a lone wolf named Tempest who died at the age of five," Storm spat, he hated telling other wolves about his parents, "Where did you learn these...things, lone wolf?!"
(Storm talking to a lone wolf named Sotob)

Chapter Five: Thrush

th

Thrush grunted as she settled down in her den. She hadn't eaten all day and was still hungry, but she wasn't starving to death and decided to do without a meal for the day. Thrush's ears pricked as she heard the sound of two more wolves approaching. One was obviously Snow; the scent made her growl. She couldn't figure out what the other smell that was mixed with her packmate's, thought.
"Snow?" she called as she rose from her den to check it out.
Snow trotted forward, followed by a ragged he-wolf who looked like he hadn't eaten for a week as longer than Thrush. His pelt heaved with each step like he had walked a hundred miles to get there.
Thrush opened her mouth to say something rude to Snow about bringing and intruder to the denning site, but something stopped her. She kept herself from smiling. The closer the he-wolf got the more she saw he was a very...handsome wolf. His eyes glinted with knowledge she was going to dredge up if it meant she had to kill him. Ouch, Thrush thought, My thoughts are getting violent.
"This is Tempest," Snow said smugly. Thrush couldn't figure out why. "He's going to join the pack so he can help us hunt!"
"And I suppose he will be eating leaves and snow?" Thrush sneered at her white packmate. She turned to the he-wolf. "Well? If you're not going to exist on nothing you will WASTE OUR FOOD!"
Snow's ears flattened. "Stop being a bitter letdown, idiot," she snapped at Thrush, "He's going to help the pack and I'd bet a day of hunting he's better at it than you."
Thrush glared at her. "And you thought I was irresponsible one."
The white she-wolf whirled around, hitting Tempest with her leg. "Come on. Let's find someone who appreciates a great hunter!"
Thrush snorted. We'll see about that! Her thoughts tumbled into anger and spite. But who was it directed at? She glanced at the new wolf's eyes for a second. He looked at her with awkward fear and turned to follow Snow.
...
Snap--no--he was Tempest now, couldn't help stealing another look at the brown she-wolf as she angrily stalked away from him and Snow. Her bitter words had seemed to hurt him more than Snow's when they had first met.
"Try to look...strong, I guess. Oh, and don't act like you know the other wolves are suppose to think they can eat your food first yet," Snow said to him as she started for the den that he assumed belonged to the alphas.
He nodded, but for some reason he no longer felt the need to please the beautiful she-wolf.
"Why didn't she like him?" the pup asked.

"Complicated pack...problems," her mother replied, "Noe everyone in the pack was welcoming."

"What about our pack?"

Her mother yawned, seeming a little troubled "That depends on who you ask..."

Chapter Six: Tempest

6db78ba8-94f2-3c2d-937b-14c0f09ff210

Snow stopped outside of the alphas' den, sniffing around to make sure they were there. "Winter?" she called carefully.
Tempest shifted beside her. He felt weird to have gone from zero to ten wolves around him in a few minutes, and half of them were staring at him and Snow. His muscles tensed unwillingly like he was getting ready to flee once one of them actually said something to his face.
"Snow?" A silver and white wolf trotted out of the den with a darker she-wolf. He glanced from his daughter to Tempest then back again. "Why is there..."
"He's going to help us hunt when the--when your pups come," Snow said calmly like she was already thinking of replacing them.
"Yeah." Tempest nodded. His ears flattened as he saw how annoyed the other she-wolf seemed.
"Sky," said the alpha as she turned to her mate, "I don't know about this."
Sky, the alpha male, shrugged. "If he's good at hunting he'll probably help on the big hunts more than he eats."
Snow's tail wagged. "Winter...please, just trust me."
Winter closed her eyes as if she were thinking harder than Tempest ever had. "Well...if Sky says it's okay, all...alright."
Snow licked Tempest's muzzle, making him feel even more awkward. "Let's meet the rest of Emeraldpack!"
...
"Get out of my way, idiot!" Snow snapped as a darker wolf stepped in front of them. Tempest winced as she snapped at her packmate. For some reason he felt weird that she didn't talk to him like that. Maybe even worse than if she had.
Snow turned back to him and smiled. "Well? That was just some stupid wolf named Leaf. Don't pay any attention to him."
You sure do, Tempest thought, a bit of resentment for his own thoughts stirring up inside him. He wondered where the brown she-wolf Snow had seemed to hate was now. She obviously hated him already, but maybe there was some hope for peace between them. Or a friendship. Tempest paused. Or more than that. NO! That's just plain stupid...why would she ever talk to a wolf she blames for wasting her food?
He bumped into Snow as she stopped in front of a fog colored wolf. She just smiled and glanced at him. The gesture unnerved him after he saw her attack another wolf who had done the same thing. Tempest watched carefully as she lowered her head in respect for the wolf in front of them.
"This is Tempest," she said to the he-wolf. Snow stood up so she was head to head with the other wolf, but put her muzzle to the side like Tempest remembered dong when Oak beat him in a fight. "Tempest, this is Stream, our beta."
Stream glared at her suspiciously. Even Tempest, the newest wolf in the pack, could practically smell the tension between them. "Just met, huh?"
Snow nodded, "Winter and Sky gave the okay for him to stay. He's going to help us with the hunts for big game."
"Alright, Snow," Stream flashed her a warning look Tempest couldn't figure out one more time before trotting past them.
"Watch out for that she-wolf," he mumbled to him. Tempest straightened. Why? She's so nice! he wondered, wishing he had the chance to ask.
Once Stream was gone, Snow scowled. "He's been a jerk to me ever since I tried to steal his rank. What a feather-head. His mate died last winter."
"Oh," Tempest said softly, "You didn't...try again, did you?"
"No," she replied, "I set my goals higher than beta."
He watched her for a few more seconds, not moving. "Well?" She looked at him curiously. "Oh, I see. You can rest in that den until your well enough to, um, challenge a few wolves for a more comfortable one, okay?"
"Okay," he said, trying to stop his voice from quivering. What did Snow have in mind when she said...challenge?
...

Thrush

Thrush huffed a few more times as she threw herself back into her den. "Irresponsible...narrow-minded...crazy, crazy fool." She didn't keep any of her hatred for Snow out of her voice. If Snow hadn't come in she would be beta now. If Snow hadn't come in she wouldn't be hungry right now. If Snow hadn't come in there wouldn't be another mouth to feed. If Snow hadn't come in I'd...I'd...be happy!
Despite her loathing for the alpha's second daughter, she couldn't help but think about the he-wolf she had brought with her. He might cause some trouble but...what if it was worth it? She sighed, trying to find some way to blame more of her anger on Snow. She couldn't. Not with the fact there was a new wolf to think of. Thrush closed her eyes, wondering what she was going to do for the rest of the dying day.
The she-wolf, the pup. She had to get them off her mind. I have a pack, she thought, Since when has some crazy wolf's rambling ever made sense? She must have been trying to scare me, that's all.
She opened her burning golden eyes when a barking sound filled the air. Thrush flung herself out of the den, wondering what was happening. She spotted two wolves: Breeze, her packmate, and the new wolf, Tempest. Tempest and Snow were standing triumphantly over a wounded Breeze.
Winter was already beside them. "What's going on?"
Snow looked at her like an innocent pup who had just happened to be there. "Tempest won. It's his den now. Breeze here can go sleep in the snow now."
Winter snarled at her daughter. "Half of the pack is barely fed, Snow, why must you two stir up chaos now?"
"He's needs somewhere nice to sleep!" Snow growled back. Her defiance made Thrush's hackles raise.
"You don't go from omega to...to alpha in ONE DAY, Snow!" Winter spat angrily.
"It was TWO against ONE. And WE won the fight fair and square!" Snow continued to argue.
Tempest just stood there looking like he was going to pass out from the stress and new injuries. "Snow, maybe we should have..."
"ENOUGH out of BOTH of you!" Winter spun around, her eyes ablaze with a hundred times the flames in Thrush's. "You...you relax in your new den while you still can, wolf."
Tempest whimpered and recoiled, making Snow viciously start to try and defend him. The two wolves stood side by side, looking like the alphas of Emeraldpack already. The sight made Thrush feel insignificant and a little frightened of her enemy.
Chaos. Emeraldpack is chaos now.
