that's not drool that's sweat!! My eggs went to less than half a few days ago to less yesterday but I also moved some of the ladies around to make more chick room and a white Leghorn went broody and took a nest box full as hers..I always get the broody leghorns

I have too many broody hens to have ANY egg production.
But I'm not sure that it's too early to molt. There are a LOT of feathers blowing around my coop, and since all the broodies are raising chicks I can't blame them for the feathers. My MF roo has distinctive feathers and he's clearly adding to the flurry of feathers I'm seeing.

Hi all I am kind of new on here ..glad i found this I live in Manchester and it's been HOT here we just got done w/ bonnaroo...My chickens are still babies no eggs yet they are 8 weeks...so sometime this fall i guess they will be ready but for now I have a fan in the coop.....but they can go from the coop to the run all day with plenty of water...i feel bad for them!

WOW, it's pretty exciting to see so many responses from across the state, even if it is for such a frustrating post.....

Now, here's your mystery of the week.

These are some of the thirteen RIR chicks that I hatched out this weekend...see anyone out of place?

That's snowball (so named for obvious reasons). I know, I know, I immediately thought black sex-link, so today I went to the farm where I got the eggs. There isn't a non-RIR on the whole farm. The lady that raises them has worked with my mother-in-law for several years and has never had anything but RIRs. All of her current breeding stock has been born and raised on her place, and she said this is her first black chick. He doesn't have a speck of yellow or white on his whole body. I'm saying "he" because his wings and tail are very short, especially in comparison to his "sisters". I went back and checked the egg shells and there weren't any that stood out of place.

Any guesses??

Justin

Sadly lost a hen today-no real reason i can think of. She laid today and when I went to put them to bed she was face down in the run.
It makes me sad but can't believe it was the heat. Plenty of water and shade and no signs of illness.

Grundy, sorry for your loss. Sometimes it just happens for no apparent reason. She probably had internal problems and wasn't displaying any symptoms. As I've seen on here before, chickens don't act sick when they are, so often they're beyond help when we finally can tell they're sick.

I don't have a clue other than some freaky gene popped up... interesting. I wouldn't keep it with the others but I would keep it. Maybe try to breed it one on one with a RIR and see.

On the other hand... maybe one of her neighbors has a black this or that... does her birds free range at all? Do her neighbors have chickens that free range?
