Bantam or standard?

I have a gorgeous d'Uccle cockeral from my butterscotch project, white with gold trim. He's gorgeous but I have a better boy that I want to keep...

Monita look on the Nashville craigslist ,there are several ads for free roosters on there.

Tncchickenut I believe there are some golden laced wyandottes on craigslist in Lebanon.

I have two pair of barred rock bantams for sale. These are young birds and should be show quality when grown. Will sell as pairs or a trio. I'm in Portland,Tn.,up near the Ky .line.

For all your fellow Maryvillians - I just had a conversation with a John Jagger about keeping chickens within the city limits of Maryville. Someone who already had chickens asked me if I knew the law and I decided to find out. According to the zoning ordinances and municipal codes, livestock (including chickens) are not allowed inside the city limits, unless said livestock was in place before the ordinance was went into effect in 1988.

To get the ordinance changed you would need to start with a petition to the 5 city council members. According to Mr. Jagger, he's been keeping up with the ordinance change request in Knoxville and he said they didn't vote on it last evening (for the second time). He is aware that keeping chickens is a hot topic in cities all around the country. His phone number is 865-273-3520.

The funny thing about this is my sister-in-law called me because a lady stopped by her house and asked if she knew any one of the chicken people who met up at the Cracker Barrel. My SIL said, "Yep! I know one of them!"

does anyone know where I can get ~ two dozen wooden pallets? I'm finally getting to build my permenant chicken house and would like to save some money on the walls. Usually, there are about 50 entries on Craigslist for free pallets, but now that I need them, there hasn't been one in two weeks.

Monita-

I have three young roosters for sale ($8 each). All three are easter eggers and all carry the blue egg gene. One looks like a blue ameraucana (father is blue ameraucana, mother is white EE). One is black with green irridescence and copper flecks all over. He is really cool looking (father is a black ameraucana and mother is either a wyandotte or a buff orp). The last is black with blue and green irridescence. He looks like a mermaid! (Same father/mother line as the other black) All are 15 weeks old and were hatched here on my farm. The mothers are hatchery stock, but both fathers are from the Gardner ameraucana line. They are great looking birds. All three are also really mellow. I have had zero aggression out of them. They should be pretty good roosters.

I go to Columbia to see family about every other week. I would be happy to meet up with you or your friend.

I'll try to get pictures later.

Maryville Emergency!!!!!!!

I just got an email from a family, Tom and Erika Johnson, who have been raising a few hens in the city limits for a couple of years. They just got a notice from Animal Control that they have thirty days to remove the birds. I know several people have been waiting to see what happens in Knoxville, but we may need to begin pushing the issue. I say "we" lightly, because I'm in the county and can't provide anything beyond moral and material support....I don't have a council member to call. This will continue to be an issue in the community so long as article are being printed in the News-Sentinel, etc. regarding similar ordinances in neighboring municipalities.

I replied to Mrs. Johnson that there were several people in the county that could provide "foster" care until they get this sorted out. I will let you all know if they take me up on the offer.

yeah, unfortunately i'm not in the city either. but i do know a lot of people in city/county government. of course, knowing them doesn't mean diddly squat in getting things DONE, but i might be able to make some inquiries.

i'm out of town until the 12th, but i'll be available after that to help if something gets rolling. if they still need some foster homes towards the end of the month, i may be able to take some. the most important thing for them to do would be to establish WHY Animal Control has sent them a notice: was there a complaint from a neighbor? what was the complaint for (sanitation, noise, outbuilding)? they also need to insist that Animal Control provide them with written documentation of the violation. it's most likely a zoning violation, which can be fought if the wording of the ordinance isn't really clear. usually it says something about livestock, but if they don't have a clear definition of what livestock is in that situation then it's more easy to fight.

whatever they do, they SHOULD NOT surrender the birds to Animal Control. Maryville AC is terrible. they should also not allow AC onto their property. if an officer comes by they need to tell them that they are not welcome on the property until the deadline has passed. they also should inform them that they must bring proof of a violation when they return.

early voting for Blount County is July 16th, so it may be a good idea to contact someone who is running for office and get them talking. i don't know where all the districts lay around here, but i know Jerome Moon is running for county commissioner in 4c (my district). he's a family friend who occasionally buys eggs from me, so he might be a good person to talk to (IF they fall in his district, which does cover certain parts of Maryville city).
