We had some temps. down in the teens last week and my poor roosters comb and wattle either froze or was frostbitten. It is now turning black. What can I do for him and how will this affect him. Please don't say it will kill him. I'm not particularly fond of him but I don't want him suffering either even tho he is mean. He's a buff orp. and the only roo that I have. None of my hens were affected by the cold so I don't understand why his comb froze or was frostbite. They have a barn with lots of hay but he likes to get up really high to roost. I have never had this to happen before.

It will not kill him, he probably will be infertile for a while, frostbite tends to do that to a roo, but he will heal in time. You can smear vasaline on the comb and wattles and it will keep this from happening.

I too look forward to spring. I just had surgery on both my knees the 17th and have had to stay off my feet.....I miss my chickies!!!!!!! My husband was so tickled he found the first blue egg to be laid. Poor thing got attacked by the roo though. Now he wears welding gloves in the coop!!!

We have snow and more snow here in Jefferson Co. Very pretty but wish the chicks could roam. I noticed that some of you are having problems with Hawks. When there is snow on the ground it makes it especially easy for the chickens to be spotted as prey. Also since most other food sources keep warm inside their rabbit holes or mouse dens roaming chickens are more inticing. I lost one a month ago and did not even think about a hawk being the suspect. Will keep an eye out from now on.

Well I am back on the sales list for birds! still trying to downsize. I have multiple bantam cochin hens for sale (regulars and frizzles) and also 2 silkie hens. Have a pair of mottled cochins for sale and a free partridge cochin rooster (very small) and free buff columbian bantam cochin rooster (very dominant) if anyone wants them.

Plus my cute silkie/ee pair!

How can you resist this face?

She has a matching rooster and I also have an EE/cochin blue bearded hen that can go with them to make a trio. They are cute and hilarious.

Also have some assorted layers for sale.......PLUS a large fowl cochin trio or quad, all splash or blue. Blue brahma project quad. Rooster is gorgeous.

Help me downsize! I need to really downsize before I go insane. Major discounts given if you take multiples.

It's me..thought I would make the list as short as I could since so many around here don't want chicks right now and those that do can ask questions.1 is going to be a huge EE Roo-red and cream color those wheaten Ameraucana hens

I would keep him but I have another that looks like a tree..wood brown with black and a cream beard and cheeks that I'm keeping for my younger EE Roo

All I have left is a white cockerel and a black cockerel, The black one is not from my flock it came from oldtimegator when I got eggs from her about 5 months ago.
CityGirlintheCountry remember last year and we kept our chickens in all winter? I don't think we could do that now that was just a few. I have more then 50 that I'm going to grow out now and a hatch every 10 days to pick from. They were in the house to be safe or because they were our dream silkies and we wanted to play with them all the time.

I have 26 chicks growing up in the garage. My only saving grace is that they are mostly roosters and will be given away for eating at about 12-16 weeks. I think there are only 8-10 girls in the batch, so that makes it easy!

If anyone wants any bantam cochin girls, I'm willing to send my mille fleur cochin rooster with them. Probably never going to use him.....I kept him originally because there was just something about him. But I want that big pen to be empty.
