What is the best way to cull a chick? I am faced with having to do this for the first time and I want to know the best way.

Many people use the decapitation with sharp shears method.

You could also use engine starter fluid (ether) placing the chick in a sealed container with an ether soaked rag.

my grandpa used to grab them by the head and shake his hand in a circle to break their neck

You can use a pair of strong scissors and simply cut the neck. Some people will place it in a paper towel to absorb any blood. Quick and merciful death.
