My barn cats have never done mature rats; they are my problem! Only poison works, IMO. And you need to change it out after a couple of weeks, to get survivors. BE VERY CAREFUL with the types and positioning of bait, so only the targeted rats and mice are killed.
There's always the 'rat terrier' approach, if you really want one, and can then keep your chickens safe from the dog.

That makes me remember, I used to hunt rats and mice at night with my pellet gun around the coop. I would put a big red light on in the run and throw some scratch out. I would to this for two or three nights in a row and then once I have all the pests trusting the area for food I would go and sit out there with my pellet gun and take them out.
