So last year I bought a male pied white eyed cameo that was potentially split to peach. This is the first time I have had good success with a two year old male. As it happens, I decided to do a little test breeding to determine if he is in fact split peach, by breeding him to my spare purple silver pied hen. Out of the 7 chicks that have hatched thus far, three are Blackshoulder (unknown sex and colour), two Indian blue (male), and two cameo pied white eyed (female). From this breeding I still do not know if he is split peach, but I do know he is carrying Blackshoulder, as is my purple silver pied hen. I believe I have at least one more egg due, so who knows. My odds seemed to have favoured the Blackshoulder. It's always nice to get some surprises :)

I still don't have any luck with my india blue split peach male, there is two hens with him, a silver pied and a purple hen, hatched maybe 10 india blue chicks or more, one white, and two i still not sure what they are, they had some yellow color on their wings when they hatched but now they look white. No peach chicks at all, my fear is that the some of the white chicks would be peach, but i will never know.

What would you all consider this guy? He is a yearling now and he is housed with a Cameo hen, he looks a lot more orange than the hen does.

Father is this guy, supposed to be Cameo Pied WE split Peach.

Mother is a Peach hen.

Same pairing produced my hen which most people seemed to think is a Peach Pied.

So, my final egg hatched. Low and behold, it's a cameo! It has no white on it like the other cameos, but I'm fine with that. Turns out that all the Blackshoulder chicks are cameo too, so that brings the tally to 6 females, 2 males. Again, this works for me, as I can always use more hens. I'm having doubts the father is split peach, but since he's got a long term spot here, he's got lots of time to tell us. I've also picked up a male I am certain is peach, who I'm going to add to the pen in a month or so. He will take over for next breeding season, allowing for a confirmation of "can cameo or purple be split to peach?" I may even add a cameo hen to really mix things up!

Wow these genetics can be confusing. I just have a few questions though. How can you get an IB out of a Cameo and Purple. Is it because of the patterns with the bird or do they always have a small trace of Blue in them? Another question is if you were to breed to sex link colors together like the purple and cameo can a hen being either and a male will be split or do I have the sexes backwards? With sex link genes one sex is or is NOT, and the other sex is, is a carrier, or is NOT.

If you breed a Cameo cock to a purple hen you will get all cameo hens and IB cocks split to cameo and purple. A purple cock to cameo hen results in Purple hens and IB cocks split to purple and cameo.

Does that answer your questions?
