Can you bold your text?

No. Just tried. It does the same thing as with emoji. Touch the button (bold, or emoji) and cursor leaves the text box, as if the emoji or bold “window”should be active, but it’s not. So none of the menu items in the upper part of text box appear to be working for me (italic, text size, emoji, etc), although have not tried every single one.
