Tetanus question. Dh is injured

Tetanus will usually not show up for at least ten days after an injury. The first symptoms are stiffness, particularly in the neck, and a headache. The stiffness gets progressively worse.

Yeah, and by then you'll be wishing you'd played it safe and gotten the shot. Full-blown tetanus has about a 30% survival rate.

Thanks everyone for the info and the suggestions. DH is still digging his feet in about going so I am waiting for it to start causing pain and then he will go. I know that he is worried about another medical bill and thats what is keeping him from doing what he knows needs to be done.

The Urgent Care Clinic is just 5 minutes down the road so when he does finally decide that losing his hand would be bad, I can be there pretty quickly.

Thank again! Will update when something changes.

if he is digging in his feet then can you take some pics of the wound and post them...

if he is still in pain it should be looked at...

if there are signs of infection make it with a sharpie so you can track the rate of spread

Do you have a county health department? Or even a "minute clinic" inside a pharmacy? Those might be less expensive and give you the level of care you need. Hubby is an ER doctor and he said to go get antibiotics, if nothing else. Trying to save on a small medical bill, in this case, could lead to a much larger bill. He sees the end result of neglected wound infections all the time!

I had planned to do the sharpie thing this morning after reading the story of your friend and the gardening incident. I thought that was a fabulous idea.

Right now he is sleeping and before bed he soaked in epsom salts so I will be peeking at it when he decides the smell of coffee is too overwhelming to resist anymore.

Web MD is a great resource for evaluating symptoms.

I understand stubborn and of course there is a risk in not seeking immediate medical attention. There is also a tendency to imagine the most horrific diseases when conjuring the what ifs. Our body's immune system when working properly takes care of us amazingly well and some of the diseases suggested while real possibilities are still quite rare in frequency. Superbugs tend to be in metropolitan areas and the hospital, tetanus however is a bacteria that lives in the soil, so we kinda run into it a lot.

This is from kidshealth.org, that is where most husbands need to look. "If you get a deep or dirty cut or a puncture wound and it's been more than 5 years since your last tetanus shot, see a doctor so you can get a tetanus booster to ensure that you're fully immunized."

I hope your husband is much better today.

when I was in highschool ... my sister stepped on a pallet in her dress shoes.. a nail was stickng out we had to cut the pallet around her foot to get her to the hospital because we couldn't get her foot loose... the doctor put her on antibiotics but her foot got so infected they had to keep draining for over a week... so please try to get him to go to the doctor before it gets too bad...
