i posted here last week for sick hen and got support and advice, but my hen didnt get better. no vets around here care for chickens. just pets or large animals. the hens problems seem to point to kindneys or infection. i finally at least got a large animal vet to listen to me and he advised Tetracycline. anyone think this is the right treatment???

Buzzard,
I don't know if tetracycline helps the runs or not. I just wanted to suggest that you try to locate an avian vet or exotic animal vet. They should be able to advise you although I know you probably live in the country where there aren't too many of these kind around. I would bring her in the house where it's warm if you can and be sure she gets plenty of fluids. Most people suggest putting V & E (vitamins and electrolytes) in the drinking water. You can get that at a feed store or you can give her pedialyte in her water. Also, a clove of garlic and 2 Tbs. organic apple cider helps build up immunity but I don't know that I'd do that until after she's better now. You can start doing that with the others (garlic, vinegar) as a preventative measure. I've read of several people on here with sick chickens that got better once they were in the house for a few days. It's worth a try, ya think?

Tetracycline is an antibiotic. If your bird doesn't have a bacterial infection, you'll just kill the natural flora in the gut required for nutrient uptake and digestion. Antibiotics are just a broad spectrum killer of microbes.

I'd go the route of nutritious food and probiotics if you can get your hands on it.

I did not see your previous post, but have you had a fecal float test done? Any vet can do it, and you don't have to tell them it is a chicken, just say it is a bird. The test should be under 20 bucks for any old cat/dog vet to run, and it will tell you if there are worms or cocci. It will also tell you the type of worms and type of cocci if it is there, and then you can google the right type of chicken wormer/cocciodistant to use to rid of it. Runny poo and lethargic nature often say cocci or prolonged worm infestation to me.

Good luck!
