Didn't you post a thread a while back with pictures of all kinds of hybrids? I may be wrong but I seem to remember a coturnix crossed with a chicken on that thread. So if they can AI a chicken and a coturnix, I don't see why it would be that hard with a bob white and a coturnix.
Of course, Strombergs doesn't have to worry about ruining their reputation by advertising and selling a product that does not exist.

Brad
I dont know one person who has bought bob-birds from strombergs when I do, and if they are genetically proven to be bobwhite and coturnix crosses THEN i'll believe it. Until then. I dont.
As for the cross with the chicken...ofcourse that was me. Funny they have scientifically crossed quail with everything but bobwhite quail in scientific studies......wonder why.......
bobwhites are native to the US
Coturnix arent...NEITHER are chickens.... interesting i must say ...hum.
And you know how long it would take to A.I. enough Coturnix with Bobwhite sperm to even have enough birds to market it on a grande scale. A LOOOONG time. Like I said before I'm not doubting that it is possible but Texas A&M are a PURE Coturnix and Bob birds from what I have seen cease to exhist.

BB turkeys can't mate naturally because of their size, yet there is not a shortage of them at Thanksgiving. The AI is completed by a couple guys in a barn. The procedure doesn't even require a lab. This entire subject is not worth an argument to me. I don't have any Bob-birds nor do I care to have any. I just found topic interesting for a brief moment.
I've said before on this forum that places like 'Strombergs' wouldn't be allowed to advertise such birds commercially without being able to prove the DNA/Heritage of the said birds (Trades description Act) in the UK.
I have issues with 2 of there birds they have advertised though their descriptions are very vague -
RosettaSpecial hybrid variety for prolific egg laying. Cinnamon colored with white lacing and white chest. Quiet temperament. Adult wt. 6-8 oz
What are they claiming these double bard range birds to be hybridised with???
Bob-Bird A new cross between a Bobwhite species and Coturnix species. Developed for the Dog training /hunting market. In our breeders' field trials, bird displayed an unpredictable flight pattern and returned to the retrieval cage. Environmentally friendly as the birds do not covey up and reproduce in the wild per our breeders' experience. Coloration of chicks will be variable. Adult wt. 12-14 oz.
This is the 3rd season they have advertised these birds but refuse to reply to email asking basic questions & request for pictures ... which they should be able to provide by now!!
Anyway There is NO Doubt in my mind that these birds do not Exist, there would be some sort of proper documentation by now.
Try and get a hold of this book - Handbook of Avian Hybrids of the World By Eugene M. McCarthy by reading this I'm sure it will come to agree with my thinking
according to this book there has been unsubstantiated claims of Colinus virginianus x Perdix perdix - Bobwhite x Grey Partridge & Coturnix japconia x Perdix perdix - japanese quail x Grey Partridge using AI, but no documented cases of Any New & Old world quail hybrids.
Known & proven Bobwhite hybrids -
Colinus virginianus x Callipepla californica - Bobwhite x Valley Quail
Colinus virginianus x Callipepla douglasii - Bobwite x Elagant Quail
Colinus virginianus x Callipepla gambelii - Bobwhite x Gambel's Quail
Colinus virginianus x Callipepla squamata - Bobwhite x Scaled Quail
My project for the next few seasons is to prove or disprove my theory. I have chukar, grey partridge (huns) & Red legged partridge eggs on order which will be grown on this year to be used in breeding experiments with bob's & Coturnix next year. I'm planning on setting up 4 experiments for each type of hybrid (male A x Female B, Female A x Male B left to do the job naturally then the same again but with my attempt of AI .. ie. me rubbing there bits together
) I'll be recording the progress over on my site, but I'll try to remember to post here too....
As for AI are you joking about rubbing their bums together? I ask because AI is a lilttle bit more indepth than that. I'd like to see your results with sucessful AI deposits so just wanted to let ya know that rubbing their bums together wont get the job done lol! Ya gotta rub the pelvis area then almost like working the last bit of toothpste out of a tube gotta lightly push the fingers back towards the vent then push on the vents below the vent and above the vent and out will secret the sperm.
Yes of course I was joking Niki, I'm not a complete novice when it comes to poultry & quail and actually earned money whilst at college working with turkey inseminators at our local producers ... I just didn't think the subject warranted such a graphic description of me fiddling with my birds as I've found to my cost that some forums frown on such things as their members can be quite squeamish compared to the UK. I wanted to explain the actual process in a photo series that I was planning on posting on my site so NO point of going into details twice.
Thanks anyway for trying to put me straight though

Suz, I was in no way demeaning you or whatever. I just wanted to let you know incase you were serious. If anyone frowns upon the actual process (which I dont think is gross at all unless you get pooed on lol) they need to find a new hobby. Its facts of life in my book.
