Sad news to report. A dog got into the area housing the quail (hanging wire cage) yesterday and destroyed the cage. Killed 12 of the 13 quail. They were a little over 3 weeks old and growing very well. My daughter was quite upset. She took the one living quail into the house and made it comfortable in a small portable cage. It couldn't walk and had blood on its wing. Happy to report the quail is eating and drinking today and is walking (limping) around. Will have to redesign our quail housing. I'm pretty sure the new design will make extensive use of electrical livestock fencing at multiple levels surrounding the enclosed area.
Well, long story short, the 1 A&M survived. As luck would have it it was a male. We got a couple of A&M females to go with it. We also acquired a pair of golden manchurians. Our first batch of 10 eggs hatched out 7 peeps. 4 A&M's and 3 GM. The kids were so excited. My daughter was insistent on hatching eggs that were laid by her birds -- I tried to convince her to accept an offer of 50 fresh eggs but she simply said, "maybe later." Here is a pic of the peeps at about 10 hrs old.
