Re-hi All

Glad to see some old names still alive here. It's been a while, so busy!.

It rained too much yesterday and I couldn't winterize my coops fast enough. Finally I called my son to ask him to help me this weekend to wrap up all cages. Next week I will go to Asia for 3 weeks. I wonder which one of my birds will survive till Dec 5.

By the way, I will see my 7 mo son over there for the first time. The Mom will be interviewed for visa on Dec 2 so not in time to join my trip to US, will have to wait till early next year.

HELP!!

This is my first winter as a chicken-keeper. How do y'all winterize your cages in San Antonio? My coop is dry, but the run is a muddy mess.

Suggestions? Should I put down dry bedding on the run and cover with plastic all around so no more rain/wind?

Good to hear from you hung!! I bet you can't wait to meet your son. It will be hard for you when you have to leave and come back. Hopefully, they will be able to come over here and be with you very soon!!

We got almost 2" of rain yesterday. We needed it, but it sure is wet outside.

This will be my first winter with chickens also. What kind of run do you have? If you could post a pic, it would help a lot.

I plan on putting shavings, leaves, pine straw and what have you in my run, once we finish it. Wet slimy chicken mud is nasty!

woo hoo! Blue is still broody then I take it.

I wouldn't worry about the legality of how many you have. No one will know with your back yard. ;)
Oh yes! She is full on broody. But she is SOOO good!
In the morning when I feed everyone, she runs out to eat and bathe and goes right back to her nest. She's also really lenient when it comes time to candle. She's such a good bird.
And to think I used to be so annoyed with her lol (she was a loud, dependent little pullet).
Only problem I've had is that Little Hawk decided it was a great place to lay, and when I was candling last night, I found a lone blue egg. When I set it aside Blue immediately starting shimmying it back under her. Had to pocket it before I could finish.

Hello all I been away for some time been really busy here. The chickens have been laying now for about a month. Getting around 2 doz a day. Other then that nothing new here. Hope all is doing well and staying dry.
Hey Harley!

Nice to hear things are going well for you.

Good luck with them! Hope they all hatch! :)

Hey Harley! I was wondering how you and the misses was doing. Great on the eggs! That's one of the best parts of my day, going out to the coop to gather the eggs. Makes me so glad I don't have to buy them at Walmart.

It's been raining here all day long. We need the rain, and glad it's a slow steady ran instead of a gully washer.
Wasn't the rain great?! We got 1.5 inches at my house.

Hope you have a great trip. I know you can't wait to get your wife and son home with you.

I've read hens like to lay where others are laying. I've seen photos of a poor hen trying to sit over 2 dozen eggs. Silly birds!

My house is finished being painted! I broke down and had a guy finished up the last side. I had started scraping and caulking it but I just couldn't bring myself to finish it. I had had enough! So has my lower back. :) I wanted to get it done before bad weather sets in and it gets too cold to paint.
Back side. I did paint the trim around the door.

I love how everything matches now. The garage isn't sitting out there all alone looking lost. :)

I decided to paint this door to match the house doors. Love it!

Finishing up the yard in the spring.

Had to share this. :) Saw it posted on FB on the Budget 101 page. They were asking for Thanksgiving horror stories. There are some good stories in the post.

Maggie Green One year at Thanksgiving, my mom went to my sister's house for the traditional feast. Knowing how gullible my sister is, my mom decided to play a trick. She told my sister that she needed something from the store. When my sister left, my mom took the turkey out of the oven. She removed the stuffing, [took out a] stuffed a Cornish hen, inserted it into the turkey, and restuffed the turkey. She then placed the bird(s) back in the oven. When it was time for dinner, my sister pulled the turkey out of the oven and proceeded to remove the stuffing. When her serving spoon hit something, she reached in and pulled out the little bird. With a look of total shock on her face, my mother exclaimed, 'Patricia, you've cooked a pregnant bird!' At the reality of this horrifying news, my sister started to cry. It took the family two hours to convince her that turkeys lay eggs!"

Welcome! Pretty flock you have there.

Are you making plans to enlarge their run when you get the additional 12?
