Im in a suburb but 10 minutes from here people have cattle and donkeys and goats! I like the mix

Hi Everyone,
I'm not a Texan, but dream of being one. My husband is a water operator and were considering a move. I've been to Austin before and loved it. We have roosters and donkeys, so we need to live some place rurally, but close enough for my husband to find work. Can anyone recommend an area to consider? I don't know where to start looking in a state so big! Thanks

What part of the state do you want to live in? You can divide the sate into sections and each part is very different. I live north of Dallas, about 45 miles or so (5 blocks away from Brookshire11) and love this area. We have some hills and trees, all the amenities of a big city but still have rural country very close by.

I appreciate the cost of living here and the fact I can ride my bike year round.


I rode 45 miles this morning - it was windy! - then did yard work. I got my step put in by the new garage door. Trevor is over so no house cleaning like I would usually be doing right now. I'm so tired I don't know if I would even be doing it if he wasn't here. A train kept blowing its horn nonstop at 4am and woke me up this morning. I haven't been sleeping well all week so that did not help. It's been a tough week for me. It was so nice to be able to take my lawn mower out the side door today!


I'll be painting it to match my brick soon.

Yeah...the cost of living is nice!!
Pretty much the reason I didn't move out there.
My cousin pays waaay more than my rent for literally 1/2 the square feet..and my house is NOT big lol

Happy Mother's Day to you too!! Your garage looks fabulous! It's funny how the little things, like the step, just put a smile on your face. I'm the same way when I get something checked off the very long to do list.

I'm in California, in the hills outside of San Diego. Talk about windy!!! We're in a wind tunnel, something I absolutely hate......15 yrs. in this house and I'm still not used to it. When I visited downtown Austin it sort of reminded me of San Diego. Not too big, lots of charm. Thanks for the welcome

Thank you. I'm a mom of five. Two grown and out of the house, three younger ones at home. Hoping for coffee and chocolate chip cookies in bed tomorrow. That was my secret request anyhow. We'd like to find a place as you've describe, similar to where we are now. Rolling hills, trees....but no wind. Does that even exist? Our little town has one four way stop. The nearest bigger town is a 35 min. drive. That's where we go to the grocery and feed store. For the big stores like Costco, Walmart, etc. we have to drive an hour 15 mins. I have to say, I'm getting tired of driving. We spend $500-600 a month on gas. Housing prices are ridiculous here. We own our home, but to move closer to town, we'd have to downsize considerably and I don't think we could find some place to accommodate the animals at the price we can afford.

You definitely want the Austin area then! There's so much wind up here by Dallas...and NO hills.
And you don't want Houston...so humid it's hard to breathe sometimes. Lol.

North of McKinney is more affordable than McKinney is right now. Housing is going crazy here. Totally a seller's market. It is nice here, but very windy in the Spring. Not too bad in the summer (when you would really like a breeze), fall and winter. Sherman might be a good place to look. If I remember right you want to stay away from the SE part of the city (can check if you want me to) as that is where all the college kids rent/live.

We have hills, just not as big as Austin. North of here gets more hilly. Dallas is flat though. Very flat. You couldn't pay me to live in Dallas or Dallas County.
