I didn't get much, since I don't have much room yet, lol! I got some more okra, green beans, sugar snap beans, spinach and a lettuce mix.

I'm hoping to put up more beds this year, then I'll have room to grow more next season.

I love the raised garden concept and look. I think I will use some of it next year when I expand, The Lord willing. It's just very pretty. Having parts raised up and letting plants grow down over the walls. I'm thinking like one bed being three beans high like for cucumbers??? Not sure if that would work but it's pretty in my head!!! Lol

Ok I have a question and I need some opinions! Crap I need to switch to my computer. Pics are on there. Hang on. Lol

Ok Henless I think this is your brooder....

I love this and I was going to build one like this then I found this picture and I wanted to ask you and everyone your opinions and ideas.
Here is the other one....

Ok I like the fact this one opens at the top BUT I really like the pic that you posted of the chick being able to walk out of yours on the ladder and then go back in at night. They can't do that with this one. The reason I thought I wanted one that opened at the top was easier clean out and if I have to catch one of the babies it would be easier to do so with the open top.

SO is there anything you would change about yours if you were to make it again. Does clean out, catching the little ones, feeding or watering any of these things an issue with your brooder? Because I really like the open doors on the front.
What would be ya'lls ideas???

This is this weekends task, that and running the electric over into the coop. LOL

Thanks! It's way smaller than I wanted but we just got a tractor so next year, if I have a water well it will be much bigger.
I can keep her out of mine but there are wild onions that grow in the yard and she will eat those too. I have never seen a dog do that and do far she has been ok. Guess she just hasn't eatten enough to counter her weight yet. She weird. Lol
Thank you. I love having it.
The people that had our house before, they put those walls up all over the place. So I have them everywhere. Lol

What did you get from rare seeds?
I'm not sure, but I think onions cause stomach upset and not much more. The ASPCA has a site with poisonous plants listed for dogs, cats and horses. You can search by animal or plant if memory serves.

There is a place I ride my bike that is so full of wild onions you can smell them in the air. They are right next to a feed lot. Can everyone say Ewwww!? Yuck! It's bad. I try to hold my breath, but that is hard to do when you just rode up a hill.

The spinach and lettuce will make a nice Fall garden. Store the seeds in a baggie with a moisture absorber and they will be good next year too. You need to start them indoors early before setting them out in the early spring.
I'm thinking about sugar snap peas for next year.

You could add a side door so they could walk in/out.

Like JB said, make you a door in the front.

I haven't found anything about mine that I would change, unless it would be the flooring of the brooder. I painted mine since it was osb to help protect it, but there is a black roof coating you get at Lowes called BlackJack 57 that I would consider putting down instead of the paint. Other than that, I'm very happy with it. I do have a door right in the middle that lowers which makes it into 2 pens if I need it.

With the two doors centered like they are, I'm able to reach all areas of the brooder. The roof of mine serves as a poop board for my roosts. If you place yours in your coop, you will need something to put over the top to keep your bigger chickens from roosting/pooping on it.

I plan on using the spinach/lettuce mix for this fall. Give us some nice greens to eat. I prefer raw spinach to lettuce for our salads anyway.

Break time is over. I'm putting some of our top soil dirt in the cinder holes. Thought I'd fill them halfway, then get some more of the organic compost from Lowes to finish filling them up. Then I can go ahead and plant in the holes this year. If I had thought of it yesterday, I would have bought more seeds last night. Oh well, better late than never, LOL

You know what I think I have that site saved because .... doesn't it have a chicken page too. I will check!! You are just full of great info and a very good memory board for me. LOL
Ok the smell of wild onion and cow poo.....

you need a gas mask at that point of your ride. My son has an old military one he wears when ever a job gets to smelly. Looks like something from a bad movie. But if you wore that, people might be a little scared!!

I thought about the side door. The sloping top would help with keeping the older chicks off of it. I just really LOVE the pic of her little ones going up the ramp. That was just so cute@!!

Hey I love the lowering door. I am doing the DL so I don't really need a poop board. So like I said the slope on the other one would help keep them off and I could do the door in the front. I don't know. I really wanted to have this completed before Warren comes home. I guess today just isn't the day to make a decision. My heart isn't into it. Got the blues!

I too am a spinach over lettuce person. I have Never planted lettuce or spinach or any kind of winter crop before. We have just been summer gardeners so I am looking fwd to doing some this year. Good think y'all know something about it. I am sure I will be bugging you with questions. LOL
Hey what about strawberries in the holes?? Would they work in there?

I started some sprouts this morning for my peeps. There isn't any grass in their pen and I want them to have something. Hey What kind of seeds would y'all plant in a run? I can block part of it off while it grows and then let them on that part while another part grows.... just don't know what would be a fast growing seed??

I'm doing DL too! If I had known about the DL method, I would have gotten chickens long ago. Chicken poo just stinks, and I didn't want to have to deal with cleaning out a nasty, slimy chicken coop.

Strawberries were my first thought to put in the holes.

I plan on checking this weekend to see if I can still scrounge some up to plant. May have to wait on them till next year.

As far as grass, just try a good mix of different varieties. Give them some variety.

@Lisa ~ Hope your coop building is coming along! Don't forget, we need pics!

@Loving ~ Did you ever find you any chicks? You were looking for Marrans I believe. Harley posted about some new chicks in Mineola. Pretty colors.

Lunch is over and it is rest time. Be heading back outside once my granddaughter gets up from nap.

Me riding with a gas mask, too funny!

I want to try winter gardening this winter. I think strawberries would be great for the holes. I've never had much luck with them, but I bet raised in improved soil they would do great. Birds and snails would get mine or they just wouldn't grow. I'll have to try a raised bed of them. You could tuck herbs into the holes too.

I have an idea for my run for greens that I got from Fresh Eggs Daily. Make a couple raised beds and cover them with chicken wire. Plant wheat grass and oat grass for them. You could do other grasses too. I'm thinking wheat and oat grass are better for the winter hear.
Another way to get greens for them is to go to a health food place that sells smoothies. They usually have sprouted wheat grass that they trim for the smoothies and once it is all trimmed up the toss it out. You can let them know you want the matt. Let it grow out a few days a you have some nice greens for them.

I got a nice bike ride in today. The winds are killing me. Riding the trainer has made me very soft. I need to get back up to what I was riding last Fall/early winter. It shouldn't take too long. I hope. Hills and headwinds today were killer! I really need to work on core strength.

Brookshire11 from the other thread found some sorta close to her. She offered to go get some for me and foster them until they are old enough to be tossed out into my backyard! She picked them up last Sat, they were a week old, and they are doing fine! She lost 2-a GCM and a legbar. I think I have 2 GCMs and a cream legbar. I also have a friend who's fiance has had chickens for a couple of years. She told me the novelty has worn off and he wants to get rid of them...he has 3 production reds. 2 are 2 yrs old and one is 7 months. He is bringing them over, with the coop!!!, this weekend. So, I will have a total of 9 when I meet Brookshire11 in the Woodlands in June.

Ms. Jellybean, congratulations to your son!!

Lovingmyhens, I love that fence.

A1Mom, neat idea on the potatoes. We already have ours in the ground. Hope to remember that idea. I use to have a potato growing in a jar over the kitchen sink. They are a really pretty plant. Okay what is wrong with cow poo???? I am one of those weirdos who love the smell of cow manure. I have cows on two sides of our house. Love it!

Henless, The chicken pen is up and I am almost done with the fishing line. I had to take a break today. I had asked my husband to put tall poles on the corner posts so when I run the fishing line, he can walk in the pen without cutting his head off. He is 6'3" and I am 5"1. I think the poles he put up are 10 feet tall.

I am standing on the top step of the ladder to tie up the fishing line. MEN!!!
