Love how you put the nests on the outside!!  Makes a lot of sense when you don't have room inside, and it's only used for laying anyway.

I need a compost bin. I'm still debating on when to put my deep litter in my raised beds. Some say put it in a compost bin and let it sit a few months, some say put it direct on your garden area.

I like my BAs. They are so pretty, specially with their combs/wattles starting to get deep red. Do you have a feed store that has been around for a long time? There is one in Longview, Horaney's Feed, has been there since I was 5 years old. They have chickes 12 months a year. Maybe you can find a Mom & Pop feed store that carries chicks longer than the big stores?

Why are you a failure? You raised them and taught them right from wrong. Once they reach adulthood, they can no longer blame us for their failures. What they choose to do is just that, their choice. There comes a time when they have to be on their own, either by choice or push. We can't bail them out forever. If we do, they will never learn to stand on their own feet.

What does he think? That you had your kids so that they can support you when you get old? LOL Kids just have no idea what life is like!! I hope he realizes that karma has a way of biting you in the arse. :)

Go have yourself a big cry, get all the hurt out of your system. You don't want these feelings to build up. Feelings like this can cause problems later on. Trust me, I know. My Dr. and I pinpointed my RA symptoms emerged after an almost break down I had over my son. It was the trigger that set it all off.

Thanks for the sunflower and squash bug links. I loved how he lit up when he used the vacuum. Something about men and motors, LOLOL

Maybe there is still hope that one day these young, "I know everything" kids will actually turn out ok!

No, but it sounds yummy!

Good news on the chicken front. I've been putting my chickies to bed every night, and it's starting to pay off. I went out last night to put them to roost, and about 7 were already up on the roost! yay! They are becoming big girls now! LOL  I hope to have them all roosting by the weekend.

I gave them a new treat this morning. I bought a watermelon at Walmart yesterday. I cut it up this morning and took them the rind. They really don't know what to think of it. A few are pecking at it, so we'll see how it goes. I hope they like it. I've hated having to waste the rind since I've sold all my horses.

We got a little bit of rain last night. Supposed to have more in the forecast for this afternoon. Hope everyone has a great day!

Yea, what she said!!

I'm thinking about painting Nathan's old room (it's the only room I haven't painted in the house yet) this color. What do you think?

My house is all earthy colors in shades of browns and greens. This should fit in perfectly and brighten up the dark room. It's currently a dark greeney color. Kind of a pine needle green but a bit brighter.

There is a wall of shelves in the room that I think I will take down too. At least part of it. Probably all of it. The room will look a lot bigger without them. Then I can arrange the furniture better and actually have a guess room! I'll have to wait a bit to buy a guest bed though. One step at a time. :)

OH!! I can use the shelves to build my chicken coop!

That color looks good JB! Very peaceful and serene. It would be really nice for a guest room.

My upstairs bedrooms are this color: Toasted Grain trimmed in antique white. I plan on redoing the hall and stairs in a slightly lighter color. We've had the house 7 yrs now, and it's time to "freshen" it up. I've already repainted the kitchen, dining room and living room ceilings. Just need to get the right color for the walls and start on them. I like to paint, but I like to do it my way, when I'm alone without little helping hands! LOL

So I went and bought 2 more nesting boxes so they would not have to wait on each other to do their business. In the old coop they all wanted to lay in the exact same spot and when it was full they got cranky. Now as you can tell, I closed up the coop so they couldn't go inside to lay.

This us what I found this afternoon! They still just used one place even though they have luxury accommodations on the other side!! Silly chickens.

I been away for a while having phone problem. I have not gotten it over the problem yet so I will still be away for a few more days. Just wanted to say that the turkeys are going to freezer camp tomorrow. Hope I do a good job on them cause I have never done a turkey. I will let y'all all know when I get back!!

I don't. I'm technically not allowed, but I would try one with a collar.
I got rid of both my roos before I knew about the collars.
I'm super picky though, because I don't want my girls mistreated and I have small kids.
I hear amazing things about Faverolle roosters, and they are SO pretty.
If I hatched one out I'd keep it.
Thank you!!!

Just got back from lunch. I work just a few blocks from home and we get an hour so I usually go home on my lunches.
Found out Eloise, one of my 2 BOs, laid that pretty pink/brown egg the other day, and Freya, by BR, was sitting where Pearl usually lays! They're picking up fast!
Got Eloise's and Pearl's eggs put up, then I'll grab Little Hawks and Freya's when I get home!

Almost filled up a carton to gift!
What collar are you talking about??

These are my girls! In the top left are the 2 EES, and right below them is my BA. Below her is my splash Marans, and right above her is the black marans, then the cuckoo marans, and at the top in the middle is the black copper. On the rt hand side is the mean PR-she lays double yolkers. Missing are the two other free loading PRs.
LOVE your babies! I just got 3 Black coppers and I am so excited about them.

Love her! She's so sweet and is a good layer. Most of the time she squats for pets when I go outside!

I have some that have started doing that and I love it. It's so cool when they let you pet them.

They will be 19 weeks old this Thursday. They get up on the roost during the day and hang out all the time. They just prefer to sleep on the floor at night, LOL

This looks yummy!!

Yay for the raise!!!

Your babies are so big! They all look like they get along well. Did you have any trouble adding them to your flock?

I checked on my chickens this morning, and all 8 were still on the roost! Hopefully some will get up there on their own tonight.
That's great! They will all follow suit by the end of the week.

So, this is the coop that I bought for the first chickens. It has no roost bar and really was only big enough for 4 chickens squished. Today, I cleaned it all up and gave it to my rabbits who have previously, for a year and a half have had to make do with a guinea pig cage covered with wood and towels. It wasn't the best.

This is the coop I got when my friend gave me the production reds. 6 will fit on the roost comfortably. Can you see the really nice nesting box on the side? Well I think it was Harley who told us about these. So about 3 weeks ago I went and bought one, nailed it to the side, put some shredded newspaper in it and waited. Nothing. I even put them inside it when they were trying to do their business. Nothing. Until today!!! We got a blue egg which means one of my EEs I guess got tired of waiting her turn.
I just got back from TSC and got two more nesting boxes. I'll put them up tomorrow so they can, hopefully, use them.

This is my ummm compost thing I just built with pallets. I put the pine shavings from the coop turned bunny hutch in there and as you can see, the chickens are tearing it apart!

And these are two of the rabbit hutches. I've got another one behind me in the picture that you can't see.
2 months ago this was all behind the original fence. Yeah!!!
Very cool!

You know, I only had them separated for two weeks, and they kept escaping their run area. So, I let them out and besides a very small, I mean small!!, pecking and chasing, there was no problem! They all hang out all day over on the side of the house by the air conditioners. I'm just tickled pink! Now, I have someone making another, larger coop similar to the white one in the pics I just posted. But until that is done the littles sleep right by the back door, in a box i put there for them!!
I know you are just thrilled!!

I ned some prayers.
Nathan is supposed to pay me rent (he's 20 and has a job) but he recently decided he wasn't going to pay me anymore because he needs his money. He is not good at budgeting I guess - he eats out almost every meal...
Well I need his rent money and he doesn't get it. Every time I try to talk to him he leaves and says he doesn't want to talk about it.
I have given him an ultimatum...pay up or get out.
I brought some boxes inside tonight to start packing him up. He won't pack. He has it pretty good here. He has to know this. He doesn't even do anything to help out around here, except run the very rare errand for me.
Please pray he will pay his rent (he owes me for June and at least half July) and if he decides he isn't going to pay me pray that he will move out peacefully.
I don't need this stress. I have enough already. :(Gi
Girl I am so sorry about your trouble. I guess we have all been there. Me with my daughter and son in law and now that they are out my 19 year old moved back home. On top of that my future DIL has moved in. We give them a set of rules to live by when they move in and we expect them to honor those rules. We have to stay true to our word. The anger wont last. One day they will both have kids of their own and they will get the joy of seeing the other side. You are in my prayers.

Nathan left work early today and came home in a huff to move out. He took some things and left with the intention of coming back for the rest.
Very ugly to me.
This is so sad. It was just a small amount of rent to help offset expenses and teach him responsibility.

And his brother let me know this....
"
Well, just know that you'll be paying your own rent when you get old."
He is apparently taking his brother's side in this.

I feel like such a failure right now.

YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE!! If you let him take advantage of you then you failed him and your self. I KNOW it hurts but it will get better and you will feel better not having that stress! trust me, I know!! LOL

I'm so jealous!! I can't wait to get eggs!! So excited for everyone and their eggs!

So glad to hear your ok. We have been wondering about you!!

Well I am going to move my Black Copper's over into the main coop tonight. I am going to try putting them in on the roost during the night and hope it all goes well. Does anyone have any advice before I try this? LOL
I have been canning and putting away garden stuff, tomatoes, peppers, salsa..... all kinds of stuff.
Every day I go out to the coop looking for eggs. Last night Shelby called me out to the coop and said they left you a surprise. So I ran out there and as I was entering the coop she said yea they left you ... one.... two ....three.....six! I stood there and let her count but realized she was counting the ceramic eggs. She didn't know I had put them out there. LOL I was so excited and then bummed and then tickled all at the same time. LOL

Glad your back, if only for a little while! Good luck tomorrow. Let us know how it goes. I've never done one, but I know I will have to one day. :)

Don't be away so long next time if at all possible! You and Hung are an important part of the cafe. :)

Chickens are silly creatures aren't they?

HARLEY!!! We were beginning to think you had gone to the dark side. Hurry up and get that phone fixed. You have been missed.

Good luck tomorrow. Ken and I did 5 last January.

Lisa :)
