Texas BYC Cafe

Does anyone have suggestions on growing fodder in TX heat? I don't really have room in my house and everything I'm researching says 65-75 degrees. If anyone sprouts for their chickens through Texas summers, I would live to hear how you do it!!
Do you want to give your chickens more greens? I would grow herbs for them in the summer. Fresh Eggs Daily has a nice list of beneficial herbs for chickens. You can also give them weeds as long as they haven't been sprayed with anything. Dandelions are good for them. See the Edible Flowers, Weeds and herbs section on this page.

I use this sprouter for me but it would work for chickens too. It is compact and works great. Super easy to use.

Oh my! I just saw the news about all the tornadoes yesterday. So sad. :(

It's that time of year again. :) Time for yummy veggie salads. :p I want to make this. It sounds soooo yummy!

I need to pick up some zucchini to make this bread too. I bet it is wonderful.
(edit: don't use canola oil. nasty stuff. I am going to use unsweetened applesauce.)

Hope everyone has a wonderful day! It is gorgeous here!! :)

@Ms Jellybean ~ Well, that just blew my ant prevention out of the water. I was hoping the mint would keep them away/out. Honestly, I don't think anything keeps fireants away/out unless its some type of poison. They are so bad about building nests under anything touching the ground, specially after a rain.

@A1momof3 ~ Hope you get your blood work done today! Good luck with the results, hope you don't have to wait very long.

I've got my beans soaking and fixing to head out to plant them. I've already put up my bean trellis. Found some veggie netting on sale at Walmart and strung it up between two T-posts. Hope it works! lol Thought that would be easier than stringing up kite string.

Nice here this morning. We didn't get much rain last night, just a trace. Going to have to water once the beans are in. I got a packet of sunflowers for my "free" gift. Going to wait till my granddaughter is over and let her help me plant them. Thought I'd put them up along the coop wall. Help block off some of the sun this summer.

Looks like a nice week is in store for us. No rain, but the temps will be really nice. Hope everyone has a great day! Off to plant my beans. :)

I don't soak my beans before planting. Does it make them sprout much quicker? Mine take about a week. I do bush beans. I don't want to mess with vines. The plastic netting is great stuff though. I've used it before for other vining stuff.

My free gift was red leaf lettuce. I'll plant that this winter when I try winter gardening. I'm excited to try that and I have a local person to give me pointers too. :)

I planted sunflowers this year too. :) You can dry the heads and feed them to the chickens. I think Fresh Eggs Daily has a 'how to' on that.

It's supposed to. We've always soaked our "hard" beans before planting. The directions on the back of the green beans said to soak for a couple of hours. On my okra packs, it says to soak for 24 hours. I planted my green beans this morning, so I'll let you know when/if they sprout!

I found a some beautiful dried herbal wreaths. I'm going to order one for my mom for Mother's Day. :)

They have a special discount (exp 5 May) for 20% off. Code: MOTHER
I found that on FaceBook.
Those are pretty! I'm giving mine a living herb garden. I'll post pics soon. :)

DGD and I planted some of the sunflowers. Still have some left, so have to find a good spot to plant the rest. I planted these along the west wall of the coop. It gets plenty of sun, and hopefully will help give the girls some shade.

I made these banana bread brownies tonight. Very yummy! Next time I am going to change up the frosting so it is more of a thick glaze though. I tried adding an extra tablespoon of milk but that didn't do the trick. I am going to add the powdered sugar one cup at a time and see how that goes.

It's a quiet day on here today. Hope everyone is having good day. :) It sure is windy here today!

I don't have the twins today so I took a long lunch and bought some stuff for the yard. I'll be planting tonight after work.

I found these recipes (conveniently emailed to me). Some look really good. I love tacos and now I want them for supper. Missing a few key ingredients though. I have the meat and seasonings and some of the other toppings. Missing lettuce and tomatoes though. grrr! Oh! I can make a taco pizza, minus some of the toppings. :)

Hey there everyone! I hope your week has been quiet and uneventful. Not much going on here in Katy. No weather to speak of, chickens are all good here. My friend gave me three production reds on fri. It's been fun watching them free range in a huge yard! I think I may be bug free for a long time. Yea!
