Texas BYC Cafe

Evening ya'll!

I did a little bit of work on my coop this weekend. I had to move the nest perches. I had them to close to the nests, making it hard for the chickens to get on. I noticed this a few weeks ago when one of the chicks would hope up there. I also put up a roost in the "open" end of the coop. I have it at 4 feet, hope that's not too high. I may have to lower it a bit.

@Ms Jellybean
 ~ Big improvement on your house! You've done tons of work since you bought it. I do like the color choices you are using. Look really good!

@A1momof3
 ~ Welcome back! Hope you have a good time on your vacation. Where are ya'll going? I'm glad you don't have RA. There are a lot of different "arthritis" related disease. Hopefully your doc will find out what is going on so you can get some relief.

@Brookshire11
 ~ Such a pretty hen! She misses her buddies and feels safer on you.

Has anyone heard from Hung lately? Just wonder how he and his family is doing.

Hunts been busy...I sent him a pm yesterday and he said he just got discouraged with what happened on the other thread. I invited him over here... But he may need some more encouragement. He said little Charlie is trying to roll over and he's in the throes of filling out all the butt load of paperwork required to bring him and his momma over here.

Chicken question: I have 6 pullets who are 13 weeks old and 17 pullets who are now 3 weeks old. My brooder is going to be too small by the time the 17 get 6 weeks old. By then the original six will be 16 weeks. The brooder is a caged area of the coop, so they see each other. Do you think the 17 can go into the main coop at 6 weeks with the 6 16 week old pullets, or should I start building a new pen?
I think since you will have more of the younger pullets, that the older ones won't know who to pick on! I would start slow, say letting out the younger ones for an hour or so a day, and slowly increase it if nothing happens. There will probably be a bit of pecking going on, just so everyone gets in their "order". Just keep an eye on it and make sure no one gets really rough.

I just sent him an invite myself. Thanks Loving! :)

@harley1975 ~ We need a pic of your silkie mommas!! They sound so cute!

Gotta run! Have a great day all!

If they are able to see each other and don't seem to want to fight though the divider then you can always try it and see what happens. Mine seem to have worked it out when I mixed my 35 4 week old full size chickens with my 8 week old bantams. And they never seen each other until I put them together. The bantams did seem to stay at one end of the coop able the others stay at the other end. They did this for about the 1st week now they get along ok. At least when I am out there. I have not found any sign of fighting or pecking going on. I also mixed my 8 week old silkies with my new 3 week old Americana's. THe silkies seem to have decided that the Americana's are their new baby chicks and let them get under them to sleep. It's so funny to look at 10 3 week old chicks under 3 8 week old silkies. Not even sure that the silkies are hens or Roos yet. So if I was you I would let them in the same place for a few hours and watch them and see what happens. Start with just a few at a time.
I am so glad you posted this. I have 2 silkies that are about 9 weeks old and they have been in the coop with my 20 13week RIR and PBR but they are in their own area separated by wire and when they are out in the run they are again separated with wire. Later this month I will be getting a new batch of chick and will need to put them in the area where the silkies are now, so I have been trying to decide how this was going to work. A friend said she puts her new chickens in the group at night while they are roosting and the next day they are all good. But this is mixing full size and bantams together. It will still be another couple of weeks before I need to do this so they will be a little bigger.

The only thing is the full size chickens are the older ones. How would you do it? The silkies don't even use the roosts ;yet.

I ordered a nice little mix from a guy here on BYC, I am getting a pair of cream legbars, an olive egger, Blue red laced Wyandotte, a couple of light Sussex, a buff laced polish and frizzles. I have a friend here in Quitman that has black copper Marans chicks and she is giving me a roo and pullet...... so it will be a nice mix of breeds. We are remodeling our house this fall and building a new barn so my flock will be getting a new home and I am going to make sure It has LOTS of room. LOL Has anyone ordered from Papa Brooder before?

Well, it's time for that second cup of java and then off to the Dr. This arthritis stuff sucks! When it interferes with lifting the coffee pot,,,,,, well something has to give LOL

Thanks everyone, I have missed talking to ya'll. I guess I have been in a funk and it's been hard to get out of it. I rented a house on Canyon Lake for my husbands 50th birthday and that's where we are going. I was going to do the surprise party thing and invite all our close friends from Houston.... have a few 5th wheels out here on our land for them to stay in and just have a big o party but then I thought about it and decided he would enjoy a vacation much more. So this house is up in the trees over looking Canyon Lake and he is very excited. We are taking the boat and are just going to chill; float the river, go to German town, enjoy the beer garden, wineries and relax!

Ok.... now for that second cup of java...LOL

So jealous-y'all will have such a nice time. Really hope the dr is able to help with the pain.

Thanks LoveHen and ManyHens for your notes. Glad to see everyone made it here after huge storm crossing TX last week ... the storm killed 1/2 of my 2-3 mo chicks.

I saw this cafe shop. For me I had stayed away from beer, liquor since 15 yrs old. Last year I started to stay away from sodas and coffee too (now I am a good boy and a bit richer). So can I come into your cafe shop for... maybe the restroom ???

I had a timeshare in Canyon Lake and did enjoy lots of quiet time walking on the levee there. Nice place and peaceful. Bring something to bbq. Otherwise you will have to drive 17 mi back to New Braunfels for some eateries. I just received an invitation to go to Victoria June 21 for a surprise party. One guy said as his wife turns 50, he try to gather all her highschool friends for this b-day. Someone suggested my name and ... voila... the invitation. After I accepted, then I told him that I knew this hs group when we lived in New Orleans, but i am not in that highschool (another words, I am uneducated, fyi, i never finish HS). Too bad, he already sent the card and I accepted this. This will be in Cajun Cowboys seafood restaurant, owned by the bro of the wife. I can't wait for my free meal. As I need to bring them something, I decided to bring... my 2 boys. More, later.

Hope the doctor visit goes well.

Hope you have a wonderful trip. :) Floating down the river sounds so relaxing.
I haven't had a vacation (a real one, not taking the kids to see gma) since 1988. I haven't any type of vacation since 1997, unless you count the trip to Corpus for my boys' dad's funeral in 2005. We turned into a fun time for them. We went to the beach and stopped off at the big cave north of Austin (?) - don't remember the name.

Nice to see you here. :)
Sorry to hear about your chicks.
You need to post some photos of Charlie. :)
