Roos have a lot more splotchy-ness lol
Where pullets aren't necessarily "boring" but there patterning and color is more even.
Roos are prone to the "rust" red color as well with dark red patches on wings usually indicating a male.
EEs are really fun to guess at, because each one is so different!

How old will they be? Are you picking them out or will they be shipped?
I TOTALLY agree with the prizes ;)
BTW, I can't wait to see all your chicks! Maybe it will help my fever...I never get a reprieve from it for long...

They will be shipped to me right after they hatch, so they will be 2 or 3 days old. He is a breeder I found here on BYC from Ca. I'm hoping I'm not going to get burned. I had great luck with the lady one I ordered but I got them from cackery hatchery. We will see!

Is splotchy-ness a 'fowl' word????  :gig

That made me laugh out loud! I could see the excitement in your face. Lol I too like trying yo play the guessing game. I love researching and reading as much as I can from others about the breed I'm trying to guess about. Y'all will come in handy when I get my new set of chicks. Lots of different breeds and I only got one or two of each.
I sure hope it turns out the way you want. I just went through that scare with my silkies but I think it worked out the way I hoped. But of course with silkies I still could be wrong. Lol
You could post pics.. ;)

How cute! Let me know how it goes.
I'm STILL going back and forth between breeder and ideal.
Ideal is only an overnight trip for the lil guys, but the quality isn't the same...
The breeder would ship from OH, which is where my last ones came from, and an extra day in transit cost me 9 chicks...
Maybe I'll just order some hatching eggs from her early next Spring and get some from ideal this year?

Ok girl let's see if my guess is the same as what y'all think.

This is the one I think is a rooster. He is the more out there, protective and vocal one.
We call him Cluck Norris

This is Ms Puff

This I believe is my hen. She doesn't have the cone like the buff one does. She is more shy.

So what do you think?

It has been five full days since I put my 17 four and a half weekers in the coop and run with my six 14 weekers. There was a lot of chasing and pecking in the run, but nite time in the coop was fine because I made a safe area with roosts for all the babies. The littles are no longer scared of the bigs in the run so the chasing and pecking is minimal. That is until tonite when the 16 littles that are not Cochins decided they needed the tallest six foot roosts. The bigs managed to intimidate 9 off their roost, but 7 littles are holding their ground. I finally unplugged the timer light for early dark because I'm worried about the little one closest to the bigs. She is getting pecked and challenged but will not budge! Wow! Chicken drama at its finest. Somehow I don't think my Alpha Hen is going to be from the 6 bigs!

I agree with you about Cluck Norris, based on the size of that comb. I have one similar 11 weeks, and he also has wattles growing. He attempted a crow three days ago, I was so proud, but after 2 days in a row, he hasn't done it since. The whites seem harder for me to tell. My one that I think is a rooster has no wattles and a smaller red comb than my Goldie. My other white is smaller, more shy but also docile if I manage to catch her. She also has not developed the noticeable comb yet.

Mine are 12 weeks old and I read that if you take your finger and feel down from the top of their head to the end of the beak if you feel a bump then that's your rooster. Well I did the little trick and Norris had the bump and Puff did not. I was happy with the conclusion I have come up with. Now as silkies go I may later learn different but we will see. I haven't heard Cluck Norris try to crow yet but I do have 2 other roosters that do it all the time so once I get him out of the little pen in the big coop and in to the new silkie coop I am hoping he will bloom out in all this roo-ness!

Chapter 2 of the chicken roost drama. When I turned out the lights last evening, 7 of my 5.5 weekers had taken half of the 6 foot roost. True there was still room for the 6 15.5 weekers, but they weren't happy to share. However, when I turned on the lite this morning, 8 babies were still up there. The brave one next to the old mean biddies flew down and right out the door! My Pekingese Gracie, who has been challenging the run fence barking, was actually scared of the Little when she was on Gracie's side of the fence, so I'm chasing Gracie who is running away and the Little who is trying to figure how to get back in the coop!
