Texas Veggie Gardeners!! Stories, Tips and ADVICE!

Any Central Texas folks here? I'm in Waco and new to gardening. I managed to get a nice tomato plant and some strawberries going awhile back but due to alot of factors, haven't been able to get a proper garden going. Is it too late to bother? I'm building some 4x8 raised beds and planning to do sheet mulching/no dig method. If I missed the boat this go round, I guess I'll start planning for a fall garden.

That is a beautiful garden! How do you keep it so lush and green? I water every night and my garden isn't half a healthy as yours! Advice would be greatly appreciated, I am in San Antonio TX.
Thanks! I use and recommend compost, compost, compost and then compost tea! I believe in no till gardening. I have added mulch, expanded shale, gypsum, lava sand, green sand, azomite, and epsom salts at various times in the past, but mostly compost. This year I have a red wiggler worm farm and I plan on using mostly actively aerated compost tea.

Thanks, I have started some compost piles, but they aren't ready yet. I only got the chickens, geese, and ducks 12 weeks ago. And my oldest compost is only 2 months old. But we have added all natural chicken poop fertilizer purchased from a store. I also added a little bone meal for root development and some other plant foods I had on hand. I will keep at it. Thanks for the tips.

You can also buy it by the bag or truckload. I used to have 3-4 square yards dumped in my driveway every spring to spread over all the gardens. Last fall I started picking up bags of leaves left at the street. I put 1/3 of them in the beds and I'm composting the rest. I had compost piles everywhere. I bought some black plastic hardware cloth to make temporary bins. I had 9 piles going at one point + 2 small piles for the chickens to play in. I'm now down to 6 piles + the 2 chicken play piles.

My poor garden has been taken over by little creatures. Tomatoes and peppers are all I have growing.

Hello everyone!
My names is Jodi and I am just outside of Austin.
I am wondering if anyone is gardening right now?
My veggies seem to not be growing as fast as I think they should, but this is my first ever winter garden and I will admitI really procrastinated putting things in the ground. I made 2 4 x 8 beds and worked the earth ( it is not quite soil yet) I added alot of compost, decomposed granite about 50 lbs per bed and crushed oyster shell. Yes I do have chickens too so I used some of the ladies supplies to help loosen and see if I could get growing.
I would love to share with anyone who is gardeningnow. Kinda help keep the inspiration growing as well.

Hi, I'm in Waco, Tx about an hour and a half up I35 from you and also a first time winter gardener. Ironically, I aslo procrastinated and built two 4x8 raised beds... lol I used layers of leaf mulch and compost to build up my beds. In one bed I planted from seedlings and that bed is doing okay. The other bed was planted from seed and is just now beginning to show signs of life, as well as a planter seeded with garlic. My garden does seem to be moving along slowly but then again, patience is the name of the game. You won't see the same kind of growth spurts as quickly as you would in a spring garden due to the shorter days. Keep me posted on your progress and I'll try to do the same. I'll share some pics later.

Sounds fantastic I found a new tip for slugs and snails as the have been eating my leafy green.

DRIED OUT CRUSHED OR EVEN POWDERED EGG SHELLS! You simply pour them on and around the plants and BOOM! no more sluggish nights. It is suposto act just like DE However it also adds calcium and some trace back into my soon to be soil earth.

I too will post some pics soon cant figure it out from my tablet yet.

HAPPY GARDENING

Here are some pics form October

My favorite helper! spreading crushed oyster shell.

Then decomposed Granite.

Planting seedlings and flowers to bring in beneficial helpers.

Inside the greenhouse

This one is 1st week of Nov.

I have a 12 x 20 shelter logic greenhouse kit. It is nice to have however it is starting to rip apart this Texas sun has a way of weakening plastics and things in a manner I never saw in Michigan.
So this year I purchased a small 4 x 4 green house to go inside my bigger one. That seems to be working for now I do know this little one left on its own would not last the winter outside! But it is keeping everything warm that needs to be.
Here are some pictures of that project.

This last one is of my Moringa seedlings. They are 2 weeks old.
