Texas Veggie Gardeners!! Stories, Tips and ADVICE!

Another wonderful thing about rosemary is that the chickens don't eat it. I have what is really the brick floor of and old greenhouse that was torn down, and I pulled out bricks here and there for an herb garden. The rosemary of course is doing great and WOW the lemongrass. It looks almost like a clump of pampas grass it's grown so well, even in the drought. Naturally my very favorite herb of all, the thyme, gave up and died. But onward we go, have replacements!

I really would rather get tomatoes started now than plants it's just so early. I'm jealous of you people that actually have enough sunlight in a window to start seeds there LOL. Until the summer, that is ;)

Let us know how those gourds grow, Hippie!

Yinepu - Rosemary is awesome - I don't think you could kill it if you tried. MIne started out in a pot, sitting in the dirt. It quickly rooted in the ground and kept growing until the roots burst through the pot. Now, like yours, the trunk looks like a tree and it has simply taken over. My plant actually split down he middle and went off in two directions and the entire plant is about 6 foot wide. It looks like a bonsai tree - except it's BIG! It never freezes, it never burns up - it's like the energizer bunny... it keeps going and going.
sounds like ours..

this one did suffer a teeny bit of drought damage last summer.. but the silly thing is in bloom again right now

Awesome pic, Yinepu!

My rosemary is in the front of the house- away from the chickens - but it's good to know the chickens don't eat it. However, if they did, would they be rosemary flavored? MMMMMMMM!

Okay, my first attempt at posting a pic....

You can just see the edge of the hoop house that I had covered with light fabric the previous year to keep the stink bugs off the tomatoes!

Hahaha I said when they ate the Sage plant that at least they'd be pre-flavored. But I didn't end up processing any of those so I will never know I guess!

I tilled up my garden today. I will get onions planted in next day or 2.

My cabbage stalks from last year. Some will be single, double, triple, and 4 heads per stalk. I'm not sure how that will work out. They were small heads last year, maybe 2 to 3 pounds.

This is my dill. Stragglers came up all around the area.

Pictures were too small. Now you can see them better.

I'm not sure why I had such a great garden last year. All I did was mulch extra heavily and water deep about every 5 days or so. We're still eating out of it. I opened a jar of salsa last night and - mmmmmmmmm!

Wow, Texas - you're waaaay ahead of me! I try to get out and do a little something every day. Pull a few weeds, add some mulch.... just something. I think its still too wet for me to till. I'm expanding this year so I'll need to till that area, but other than that one spot, I'm trying not to till. If I till - I have to rake up rows and that's hard work.

I'm trying to perfect the art of being a lazy gardener.

I planted 4 blackberry plants yesterday (Brazos)
I started 2 more flats of seeds.. herbs and tomatoes and as soon as the last of the tomato seeds get here I can finish that.

I also had to fence off my strawberries and garlic since either the ducks or the armadillos thought it would be fun to dig them up (I blame the ducks.. they are such troublemakers)
at least the boars haven't found my garden yet.. though I did see a dead one on the side of the road this morning about a mile up the road

Has anyone planted their potatoes yet?.. I am tempted to plant mine out in the bed I started (lots of compost and bunny cage droppings).. but knowing our weather i'm not sure if I should give it a go or not.
