Texas Veggie Gardeners!! Stories, Tips and ADVICE!

Hi, I'm in the DFW area. I'm also a better flower gardener than vegetable gardner. My tomatoes always start out very nice then get some kind of wilt/rot in june or july. I think I may not start them early enough or over water. my front yard garden (see pic below) has cilantro and beets in the first square, lettuce in the second, and strawberries in the third. They are all edged in red onions. I don't know when to pick beets. I really don't like them much, but I think they a pretty in a winter garden.

strawbwrries I mostly grow vegetable I think are pretty in the garden. I have 1 seedless backberry bush. I've have 1 producing fig tree. I planted 2 others last fall. I have 4 dwarf apple trees, 2 peach trees, a pomegranate and a plum tree. Except for the fig tree, I haven't had any of these trees long enough to produce fruit. I have sprayed once with dormant oil this winter.

Does anyone have any paw paw trees? Are they producing?

Nice looking garden! My experience with tomatoes is that you must plant varieties that are wilt resistant and hope you get a nice crop before the wilts and scum and heat kill them, usually from the ground up. This summer spider mites killed mine. I never, in 40 years of gardening here, saw spider mites on tomato plants. But it was just the one variety of tomato that I wont' be growing again!

Welcome Joan! Your garden looks great!

My tomatoes have sprouted - but they're looking pretty spindly. They're in a south facing window, but I think I need to get them under lights and quickly!

I picked about 4 lbs of broccoli out of the garden on Saturday. I used a portion of it to make the best cheesey broccoli soup last night...mmmmmm! Tonight I'm going to have collards sauteed with some bacon. (need to stop talking about food - it's two hours until lunch time!)

I'm thankful for the rain, but we've gone from a desert to a swamp at my place. It needs to dry up so I can get back to work in the garden.

Has anyone tried growing artichokes? I've got some seeds, so I'm going to give it a try.

Take care!
