Texas Veggie Gardeners!! Stories, Tips and ADVICE!

I tilled up my garden today. I will get onions planted in next day or 2.

My cabbage stalks from last year. Some will be single, double, triple, and 4 heads per stalk. I'm not sure how that will work out. They were small heads last year, maybe 2 to 3 pounds.

This is my dill. Stragglers came up all around the area.

Pictures were too small. Now you can see them better.

nice. I need to try growing some cabbage, I planted broccoli last year but it didn't really produce anything. I think the soil at my old house was too clay and the roots never really got well enough established

A little over 300 volunteer onions planted so far. I probably still have that many more to plant. I put the rest back in pots to grow. Majority of them are just sprouts, maybe 2 or 3 inches in length total.

I don't even eat onions! lol

Tomorrow going to get pepper and tomato seeds started.

I've got my tomato plants on the porch ready to go in but I'm holding off. My aching back and hip are telling me that we've got more cold weather coming up :gig I guess age enhanced problems have their advantages! Yesterday I raised the borders on one raised bed in a different sort of way and I really like it. Traditionally you lay landscape timbers flat and stack them. Well when I put 2 of my beds in, I only had a single layer of timbers and had them on their sides instead. So when I mulch heavily, the organic matter eventually spills over the top. Well I took more timbers I had lying around and put those on their sides too, right on top. The corners are "interlocked" and pinned in with timber spikes. I'm going to do them this way from here on! You get more height and so long as it stays, why not? Here you can sort of see how my gardens are set up, in permanent beds. These were taken during the drought so no grass, and only some of the garden was getting water. Those really green things in the small bed in the top picture are India Spinach Beet. I got spinach tasting greens even during the 110 degree days! The other things in the large bed are sweet potatoes. Anyhow I tend to use whatever I find and whatever is lying around for borders. On one bed I did get extra energetic and not only bought new timbers, I half-lapped the joints. What work. I doubt I'll be doing that again. Makes a really nice looking bed though. I've added three more 4x8 beds since this picture and probably will be putting in even more. At last I have enough compost to do it with! And from scrounging in the trash I have the lumber too.

Awesome Galanie!

Do you just lift off the PVC frames to plant/harvest? Or do they open up to where you can reach in? I would love to have my growing area covered so the chickens could patrol for bugs and weeds in between beds. Right now, my BCM's have some access to the area and surprisingly enough aren't destroying too much. They even leave the lettuce alone so that I can share it with George!

I have both. The 4x4 ones are lift off, and the 4x8 ones are either roll off or have an oversized gate on the long side. You should see George's wierd looking son. That is the sweetest boy, almost as sweet as his daddy. Too bad he's an odd looking mutt, I'd love to keep him. (mom is a dark cornish) - I still miss my George! Tell him his next lettuce was from him old mom hehe.

Yep Joan, anything looks good growing in a garden.

Very nice setup galanie!

I got bell pepper, 4 different type tomatos, egg plant, and squash seeds planted today. Only had room for 2 flats. Got 2 grow lights in utility room above the freezer.
