We have such a high humidity level in the air naturally that if I don't incubate totally dry in a styro I end up with a huge amount of sticky chicks. Sticky chick is different than shrink wrapped. Sticky chick is as Yinepu describe a horrible stickiness that will even stick to your hands if you try to save the chick. It doesn't wash off and is a nightmare and it is caused by too much humidity during incubation. Shrink wrapped is a chick that will get stuck in it's shell at hatching because the hatching humidity is too low. If you have too high of humidity during incubation you can put a bowl of uncooked dry rice in the incubator and it will absorb the extra humidity. Just stir it now and then. There is a thread on here - BYC - that shows the egg when candled and what the air cell looks like in a good incubation. If your air cell is too small toward the end of the incubation you will end up with sticky chick or little glue heads as I call them

or drowned chicks.. ("glue heads" just cracks me up

)
if I had to choose... I would rather deal with a sticky or extra dry than a drowned one anyday

cause you can fix dehydrated or sticky.. but you can't fix dead

In all though... it's better to follow Melissa's advice and monitor those eggs.. avoiding the problem in the first place is the best way to go! (and makes for healthier chicks)

Thought I would post on here for those of you that would like to help but are too far north to get down to West. Rawhide Rustic in Burleson, Joshua, and Cleburne is accepting donations. The owner, Mike, is matching cash donations dollar for dollar. You can even call in a credit card donation if you need to. He will be leaving the Lorna street location at around 5:45, he will be at the Willshire Blvd St location around 6 ish and then will stop by Cleburne on his way down to West.

ETA Here is the location of their facebook that has all the phone numbers and addresses. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rawhide-Rustic-furniture/183782795003840?fref=ts

I need to get some new pics of him...and some good profile and head shots so i can get an idea of type and be picky with sarge on what pullet i get, so ill be sure and post them soon! If you have any experience with them it would be much appreciated, as im kinda learning on the fly with these 2!

if i wanted to get into raising some rabbits, what are some breeds to look into. i know about the flemish giants, my gramps use to raise them when i was a lil-guy. but aside from that i have no clue really...just curious as to what some of the other "production" style rabbits are. Would like to get a pair and as the breed grow out the kits(is that what they are called?) for meat.

And also, what are the first steps in starting this process? any info is appreciated!
