Texas

Well it's only open air on one side which is facing south for the summer breeze, but I'm planning on adding another section to the open side in the future to give them more room, but I was planning on leaving it open on that side. My other knotheads that free range won't even entertain the idea of sleep under cover or in a nice coop so I figured since 11 months out of the year it's hot I thought I would leave it open. I can always put plastic up if I think it's gonna get to cold! Oh and my dad told me today he should finish my nest boxes for the new coop! But I will say I'll believe it when I see em! I hope he does build them though!

she should be fine then.. I'm sure many of the others would have been fine as well if people didn't cull them because of size (not blaming people for culling.. I just know it happens a lot to chicks that don't meet certain standards..which is a must with some breeding programs)

Anyone else have buff orps? I thought that they were supposed to be one of the most friendly breeds and my 4 weekers are still going nuts any time i go near the brooder, and i do this multipe times a day.
The cuckoo marans that are a week younger are catchin on quicker....silly chickens

Mine have always been pretty laid back towards people.. but try to be the alpha birds in the henhouse with other chickens

Yinepu, fourteen of the turkey eggs you sent look to be developing and I have a couple of my quail piping internally, yippy!

Holy nuckle futs! It's cold!!!!

yup.. Texas in the "spring".. grrrrrrr

here's a pic of my coop, it's not much but it looks like my grandparents coop from the old farm! It matches my old time farmer decorating motif! Lol! Which translates to that's the cheapest way I know how to do it!!

LOVING IT! I am thinking of telling DH we need much more ventilation. I was expecting more ventilation than what he allowed in the coop.

Well I have a very sensitive nose so I want all the ventilation I can get and as we all know chicken poop can get very smelly on certain days so I like as much of a draft as I can get to help out. I've been in a few coops that could gag a maggot, but those weren't kept clean, I find it just helps with smell for extra airflow and it helps in the summer to keep chicks from overheating!

Sweet PDZ stall refresher. It's actually sold in little containers for chicken coops and supposedly to help stuff compost better but cheaper to buy in bags for horses. We do a sort of modified deep litter method and the PDZ is great for cutting ammonia and poop smell.

Here is a picture of one of our coops. It is far to hot here in the summer to lock my birds up in a building that is closed.

Thank you! They outgrew their brooder at 3 weeks. I wasn't expecting them to grow so fast! However, it's a learning experience. They've been fine in their coop. We purchased two more heating lamps that are stronger than the one they had in the brooder. So now they have 3 in the coop. And we'll turn only 1 on when it's warm out, but last night turned all 3 on since we knew it would be cold today.

Does anyone else have chicken brain? I'm at home - doing stuff with the chickens, watching the chickens, showing my daughter how to care for the chickens, I'm at work - thinking about the chickens, and wondering what would be good for the chickens. I'm at a friends house - thinking about the chickens, talking about the chickens..... I feel like I have chicken brain! Loving it!
Me too. And I just found a wonderful enabler to get me started on Chocolate turkeys! And a baby goat. Half nubian half spanish. Should be neat looking male goat for my herd. Now just need to locate him some girls his age. Got a few months on that before he is ready to leave his mama.

so speaking of the lil man...i dont think he has anything! sime random diagnosis from a teacher and now we are required to get a Dr. approval to return to day care. the only issue is that DW just started a new job so her insurance hasnt kicked in yet...so we are paying for an unnecessary dr. appt outta pocket. was kinda heated for a while yesterday evening once all this started coming to light....
That really sucks. I would have thrown a fit and made them either pay me back for the wasted trip or make the teacher pay for it. Once you take him to the doctor, if he is fine, then I would be making sure you get reimbursed for your time and money, somehow.
we have eggs...

in yesterday's mail: 20 (yokohama and pekins)
in today's .. 60 (ancona ducks.. sumatra.. and araucana)

I have right around 300 eggs total between the bators plus what are waiting to go in (have to settle after their trip)

goose eggs are pipping.. and pulled some clears the other day

I think I even hand turn eggs in my sleep

When I worked at Jack in the Box I would hear the timers in my sleep. I would wake up and just be certain there was a batch of fries burning somewhere.

I have moved my dot. I will eventually move it off of where my house is, but for now I would like your guys opinion on that scrawny piece of property.

ETA, just realized how odd that comment sounds, I have moved my dot on the map.

Oh man, I have to stay away from the local feed stores when they get their shipments of chicks. We're only allowed 20 hens and 1 rooster by city ordinance and we have 15 girls so I have to be VERY careful with what I do!

On a side note, ...Ok so I was wondering is it normal that during shipment ALL chicks survive? I guess since it was my first time ever ordering chickens I was actually expecting some to not do so well. However, all of our girls are doing great at 4 weeks old. They had some pasty butts at the beginning from stress in shipping the first few days, but cleaned those off with warm wash cloth. But, other than that they're doing good. Even our runt is doing good. I was just surprised that they all lived and are doing great even though they were shipped through the mail.
My brother and I split an order from Ideal back in March. All 28 survived, until my brother's pup got several of his. To this day my twelve are growing strong, even my runt. I have to add that I purchased two from the feed store (also Ideal chicks) the week prior to getting our shipment. I thought to myself (from reading so many posts about losing chicks) that I would probably lose a few, but added with Murphy's Law since I got extra all mine would live. LOL It worked.
