He didn't get in. He pulled them through the wire. I had them in a wire dog kennel. I triple check each section that the chicks couldn't fit through. They were plenty big enough.

There was no dirt disturbed around the kennel. No sigh of any struggle. Nothing.

All I want is to have colored eggs.

Gonna have to break down and make a HW cloth enclosed run and secure coup. i have lost about 12 chickens to this and that reasons...all woulda been avoided with a decent HW cloth enclosed run.

I have a secure coop, and big birds are locked in at night. It has 4 layers of chicken wire over the windows. It's ft knox. The babies were too small to go in there, and no way to separate them from the big birds.

Its 81 degrees, wind is out of the South at 1 mph and its 90% humidity at 9:00 am.

So sorry for your loss, I think it happens to everybody when they first start out. Those coons are terrible for chickens they will kill just to kill and leave the bird just laying there. I have been lucky where I am haven't seen any coons yet anyway keep my fingers crossed. Don't give up just get wiser, hang in there.

I've been very fortunate. I've only lost one big bird to a coon previously. That's when I developed the ft Knox coop. And I've had the chicks in a brooder cage on my porch for two almost 3 weeks. I've trapped 2 coons a week for 3 months. They haven't been interested in the birds, just the feed.

i have been reading up on quail and it says they can live ina wire bottomed cage. Is that simply a HW cloth bottom or is there are specific "cage-wire" they refer to when talking about this?

I give up. Absolutely give up. Apparently I am not meant to raise chickens. A coon wiped out all of my babies over night. Just moved them outside. 3 hand picked EEs and 3 SLW that I beat the pavement to find. All of them. All that's left is 1 foot and a small bunch of feathers.
Hello my friend from up the road...I am sooo sorry for your loss...and well...I would encourage you to stay in the game....it has been a hard learning process for me as well in keeping my small flock safe from predators. But, eventually, all the learning just starts working for the best. Step back, take a breather, figure out new things and get back in the game! I especially feel for your SLWs, I know how terribly hard you worked to get them.

That's what I'm most upset about. Worked my tail off to find some that weren't hours away. The EEs were from the feed store, but have the best little beards. On top of it all my favorite bird, Cherry, is sick again. She was my first Amercauna. I've decided to have her put down, since I can't bring myself to do it, I have to take her in tomorrow morning.
