About 5 days ago while watching them I realized, they have NO IDEA how to be chickens. They don’t scratch around, don’t even give bugs a second thought, nothing. They just follow me for food.
So I decided to train them to be bring out their instincts.
I had the same experience with some Ameraucanas. The first time I put down a plate of bugs for them (carefully harvested from my composter), they shrieked in terror and ran away.
If you want to come and see if some of my birds might interest you, just send me a private message and I will give you directions. Have a lot of birds for sale. I had to get out of breeding so I just set them free to free range. I in large breeds I mostly have Cubalayas (Endangered breed of Cuban gamefowl). I have some other breeds, but mostly only have males left.
Here is a pic of my mixed free range flock (not all of them, just the ones at the feeder). Show birds, mutts and culls all running free. Makes me want to sing:
"Born free, as free as the wind blows As free as the grass grows Born free to follow your heart
Live free and beauty surrounds you The world still astounds you Each time you look at a star
Stay free, where no walls divide you You're free as the roaring tide So there's no need to hide
Born free, and life is worth living But only worth living 'Cause you're born free!"
That is a lovely feeder system! I have all of my birds together in a good sized field with a few pans and buckets and such. I really need to make something like this. You bought that from TSC or the likes right? Thanks for the idea. And I really liked your other pics.
Quote: uglychickens....I'm in Burleson I have a couple of RIR/brahma mixes...they are only about 2 months don't know if that interests you but if so let me know...they are feathering very beautiful and have the brahma feathers on their legs and feet
Wow, I hope she makes it also. I really wish we lived closer, I bet she could teach my boys to be chickens. Have you had any luck on placing your other birds?
Very little. Everyone wants my Sebrights, but nobody that lives within 200 miles. I have a couple offers to take birds for free, but I would rather just let them free range then do that. I have over $2000 invested in just the cost that I paid for my breeders birds. I tried to buy the best. Anyone who wants them for free has no idea of the value of them and they would just be another chicken to them. At this point, I am mostly want to sale just my breeder birds to get them in the hands of someone who can appreciate them and use them properly. The rest I plan to keep and let free range on my 10 acres. My sebrights and Polish are the only the ones I am going to sell all off, because they have no chance free ranging.

I bought this at Walmart for $69. You have to buy the solar panel separate at Academy, which adds another $20. I have used these for years to feed my free ranging birds (mixes, mutts and culls from my breeding program).
