Maybe they save eggs or breed their roos before the show?

It would seem to me that with all of the PETA types, that the literal throwing away of live animals would make headline news. I'm SURE it would in Travis County.

Do they not have a rep from like the Human Society or some other animal control group at the shows?
....I'm asking because I never participated in 4H (I wish!!). Nor do we have children or any other family members who do/did.
You would think they would be around. Ken and I went the county fair two years ago and we won't go back. They had chickens out in the full sun and we had to look really close to see if they were still alive. I have never seen a fair do this before.

The state fair in Dallas has them inside with fans on them. At least the rabbits did. I never seem to get to see the chickens. I will definitely make a point to see if I can find them this year. We go every year to look at the animals and now that we have a pseudo farm, I love looking at the tractors and stuff. ;)

Same here! In Indiana they had Antique Steam Engines shows. They were so cool. Ken and I would go and stay all day. I had to drag him away! Another thing they had going there was Combine Demolition Derbies. That was fun to see!

I think something is wrong with one of my girls. My brahma is just laying around. She will move if I pick her up and she ate a little when I fed them but she is just not her normal self. What else should I be looking for?

have you ben able to check if she's rattling or sneezing...that's not the right words in the chicken world but a lot of chickens have been getting bronchitis since we started getting some rain

If this is true, then what the heck is the point of it all? Why spend that time and effort in a bird just to show it off, then discard it afterwards. That makes absolutely NO sense to me. Isn't the bird you take to a show supposed to be the best specimen you have on hand? Why discard it instead of breeding it and duplicating the genetics? I don't get it...

The people I know are just showing young birds, not their primary breeding stock. They usually sale their birds after the show. But this just a couple people I know. I made the mistake of bringing a strange bird to my place years ago. Never again! I never planned to show my birds either ( other then in pictutes).

It's raining buckets at the moment!

I didn't think about the chickens getting sick with the rain. I hope my babies had enough sense to go into the coop.
