I have a question for the Ameracauna owners: How good a flyers are they? Will they fly over a 6' fence

Mine (EEs) certainly could...although two of the three that did it best disappeared--one to a hawk and one the dog. The last one was content just to fly up to the top of the gate frame.

X2

My 15 week olds have just a slightly bigger comb. I'd say pullet.

I should add that they are 3 RIRs and a Orpington (top hen, pecking order got reestablished she ended up on top)a 6 week BR and an Ee :)

You took their heat away at 2.5  weeks?  I hadn't thought about them getting used to normal temps more quickly.  I just wanted something that would be safe and not have to always be adjusted by the ambient temperature of the room.  I am just so surprised at how much happier and relaxed they seem.  They are so quiet.  I really like it.  Like you, I just wish I could see them.

My 6 week olds BR and Ee have outside with the bigger girls, this is their second week our there.

I don't have Australorps but in my breed, that would be more consistent with a female - I would be seeing a much redder, larger comb and wattles if it were male.

Thanks! Any idea why one would develop so much faster? The one in back has slightly redder and developed comb and waddles but is shaped very much like a lady. Her tail is short and roundy.

The other's waddles are slowwwwwwly coming in but is slightly bigger. I am baffled.

Thanks again!

Not bnjrob, in my limited experience, the reason I say the back one "could" be a rooster is rooster's tail feathers generally grow in a lot slower than a females the the waddles are more red than I would expect at that age, but I don't know this breed that well. Which one is more affectionate? Again "limited" experience but boys are more affectionate at first that girls, girls generally change when they are laying, then become nice. Roosters are nice from the "get go" but then can change. Can you get a close up pic of the saddle feathers? The feathers around the tail are generally more pointed and long in roosters but rounded out and shorter in pullets.

Early and late maturity can happen and is generally genetic. I just went through the pullets that I hatched last year to pick the ones I would be keeping for breeders, and one of the things I looked at was who matured faster among the pullets from the same hatch.

Some people note tail growth in their birds as an indication of sex, however I have not been able to consistently and reliably correlate tail growth with sex in the birds that I have. There are some breeds that have characteristics that are related to their sex, such as wing feather length and coloring.

Breeds can vary in how soon they show sex characteristics and what type of characteristics they show. And birds from a hatchery can vary from birds of the same breed that are obtained from a quality breeder - because so much of this is genetic and breeders generally monitor different characteristics than hatcheries do when they choose who to use for breeding stock.

Good post

Sorry bnjrob, thought you logged off!

Hope everyone has a great evening! This weekend should be perfect for getting things done! Hoping to plant some veggies that we have started and finish up the large run on my large coop.

I'm with ya - I've gotta try and get stuff done this weekend before it gets chilly again. I just got my new onion bed built and planted this week and now need to work on new potato bed.

I've been looking on Craig's list and I found a nice coop. :)  I think it is priced too high so I am trying to get her to come down.

I'm a single mom too and I don't make much money either. I have to be very careful how I spend, especially since I did the roof and got new tires already this year.  I have some major things that need to get done around my house this year too.  I need a money tree. :)

I found this horrible thing too.  What were they thinking?!

I've been asking Santa for a sugar daddy!! So far, nothing.
