Texas

My Chicken Gardening book came.  I love it! I haven't really started to read it - got a few pages in at the vet - but I did do a quick skim through the whole book.  I am so glad I haven't really done any landscaping in the back yard yet.  This is going to be great to refer to for what I need to do this spring.

I came across this site for chicken feed.  It looks a bit pricey but it is all natural and free of junk you don't want in your feed.  [I was doing some reading on canola oil last year and the oil they make sound so great for you is actually really bad for you. I quite buying it and use sunflower oil now.]   Anyway, I don't think they sell it in Texas so you would have to order it.

Hope everyone has a great day!

I use canola oil. It's bad?? Great. So do you use sunflower oil the same way? And is it found in most grocery stores??

Either way we had 4 killed. When the visitor dog left I thought my dogs were going to be fine but after a couple days they did another killing spree. Down 9 chickens, with 6 left. Very, very sad about a silkie who was a proven egg setter/chick raiser. Also lost an EE roo I'd have kept because he was gorgeous.

I'll have my hands full with a little baby human girl arriving this June so I'm perfectly happy to leave the eggs and chick raising to the chickens. :)

Sorry to hear about your chickens. It is hard when neighbors dogs or predators get them, but when it's your own dogs, makes it that much harder.

Congratulations on the new baby! I'm sure she will bring much joy to your family.

Once the door is open he just sits down and stares at the hamster ball waiting for it to go outside. He thought the hamster needed out....go figure.

Gotta brag on my handsome guy for a minute!

He's going to be a pretty boy! Such a shame you have to give him up.
Update: I am down to one hen, Lena.

So sorry Lisa!

I found these interesting things today while browsing etsy.....

This is such a cute book. I wonder if I had it when I was little. I had tons of animal books. I was too little to have it in 1967 but I bet it was still around when I was old enough for it. It would be perfect for your daughter Brynn. :)

Another way to make money from your chickens. There is more than one person selling feathers on there too.

I actually found several more items, one is an egg cup from the USSR that I would like to get buy the shipping is outrageous! You'd think they were shipping it from Russia and not Florida.

I sure hope my dogs can accept the fact that these new chickens are now part of our extended family. Might have to shoot em a couple of times with the paintball gun for them to get the message. Don't be surprised if I post a pic of a rainbow colored lab. He's a little hard-headed.

My kids have this little hamster/gerbil/rat-thingie that rolls around the house in this plastic ball. Whats the first thing you think a lab puppy is gonna do when he sees a ball rolling around the house??? YEP, he wants to play with it. Well, we broke him of it and now he really pays it no attention except the other day....the thing is in the ball rolling around and bumping into the back door a few times. Django (the lab) sees this and runs over and starts scratching at the door like he needs to go outside. Finally I get irratated enough to get up and open the door for him. Once the door is open he just sits down and stares at the hamster ball waiting for it to go outside. He thought the hamster needed out....go figure.

Chicks are particularly interesting to dogs, more so than bigger birds. Their flutter is just irresistible to most dogs. Be extra vigilant with your dog around chicks, even if it is good around big chickens..

I get mine at Walmart. I don't use oil much so I am still trying to figure which type is best - Extra Virgin or regular. It can flavour food a little. I tend to use unsweetened applesauce when baking and I also use olive oil. I love coconut oil too.

Canola oil is really rapeseed oil with a bunch of stuff done to it. A Google search will bring up a bunch of articles to read

Hahaha! I love this! I can totally see the dog waiting for the little hamster ball.
My dog is STILL adjusting after 7 weeks. He doesn't understand why he can't get in their pen with them.
He's sweet, and I love him, but he's a dog, and I don't trust him around them.
Our family cat passed away, LITERALLY on our trip up to Dallas, when we were moving (liver failure, he was too chubby).
We buried him the next morning at my mother I laws, where we stayed for a few weeks.
A few nights after, I found fur and bones all over the property and had to go around picking up was left of our cat. I cried the whole time.
I never knew if it was him, my mother in law's dog, or coyotes. But I still wouldn't trust him with the birds. Don't want to go through that again.

Why can't he stay? Where is he going?
Stupid McKinney will let you have TWELVE chickens and NO roos...silly.
He's going to Copperas Cove, by Killeen! Sounds like he will have some Barred Rock and New Hampshire Red girls to keep him company!
I'm happy for him actually, I'll just miss him. Lol.

Update: I am down to one hen, Lena. DH is going to put Droopy down when he gets home. She wasn't eating today, just sitting. I picked her up (which is unusual) and had her on my lap. Her head was under my jacket for a bit. I noticed little flecks of blood on my coat. I put her down and then I noticed my shirt was red. When I checked her over she looked fine...no feathers missing or anything.

Oh No Lisa.....I'm sorry....

We use coconut oil, EVO, and BUTTER lol
I haven't deep fried since last summer...but when I do I have to admit I use vegetable oil. (I know..deep fried is bad..but okra is SO good that way)

I'm SO getting her that book! Thanks!
She loves her "baby chicks" and "momma chicks". Lol. She sat in the mini-run with them the other day and wouldn't get out! lol
That feather thing is neat! Never would have thought....
I could do some serious damage on Etsy (with unlimited funds of course

Having a rooster for a neighbor is not fun. I did for a bit. Not sure what happened to him but he is gone now.

Try coconut oil to pop your popcorn in. YUM!

I'm glad you are getting that book! I would have bought it if I had a little one. Those days are long gone for me and I am not old enough for grandkids yet.
I love etsy.com and I too could do some serious damage with more funds. :)
