Texas

If I order from MPC I can't get the chicks until July (right now, that can and will change the longer I wait. Could get them sooner too. It depends on how things play out on their end), but I would get one of each of the breeds I really want.

If I go local, plus the guy in TN, I end up with want, but not all the breeds I want. Mainly I can't get a buckeye.  I really want a buckeye.

But I also don't want to wait until July for chicks.

I guess I just made up my mind.  :)

You are making MY head spin!!

Please come and support us at the Copperas Cove Texas City Council meeting tonight!

There is a meeting that I and a few others will be speaking at tonight at 6pm and we would love any added show of support. We are trying to get them to allow backyard chickens.

Thanks,

Shane

I have a question, I am planning on getting 3 silkies, but probably only should get 2. I've always liked odd numbers of things.... Would just 2 silkies be alright in a mixed flock of full sized hens?

I'll have a Delaware, BCM-(3), cream legbar, Americauna, and hopefully a buckeye. Wow! How did I get up to so many?!?
I'll be selling the extra BCM. I had to get 3 since they are being shipped.

My 'new' egg basket came today. I love it. :) I am going to use it for my garden too. It's from the 1950's or so. It reminds me of the fish baskets we used to keep fish in when we went fishing. They hung over the side of the boat in the water to keep the fish alive until you came in.

Open, while carrying. Eggs can't fall out.

Stands up.

Folds flat to store.
I love this!!

Etsy.com :) You can spend hours on there looking at chicken stuff. Right Brynn? ;)
There you go bringing it up again..guess I know what I'm doing with my free time tonight

If they don't, lots of us on the thread have active incubators. I will have chicks all year long

I'm almost positive I would totally mess up an incubator...but I have Silkies now!

I have 12 baby velociraptors. I fed them live meal worms today, and they went crazy. One moment, quiet peaceful little chicks, and the next a frenzy of chicks running every which way at incredible speed. They learned really fast not to just run around with a worm in their mouth, but to actually eat it. Now, instead of running from my hand, they run to it and just bite hoping for a meal worm. I'll have to be careful I never fall on the ground around this crew--I think they might eat me. They learned to eat the meal worms faster than did the four 6 to 8 month old bantam Cochins that came this year.
I laughed a lot at this. Mine do that with grapes!

My best friend crashed his bike yesterday. He was riding when he hit some mud and went down hard. He ended up with a dislocated and broken pinky and 6 stitches in his eyebrow. He is very sore today. I am so thankful it is not worse, I know it could be. My prayers for his safety were answered.
It is killing me that I can't be in Ohio to care for him. I'm still having a hard time getting over his moving.

Gorgeous day here today! I want to get out and ride again. (I got sunburned yesterday on my ride!) We have winds moving in though. Not sure that I can. I'll have to see how things are in an hour. I don't like getting blown around on my bike. I may just work and then do some yard work. I can ride Thursday on this week. :)

I am loving this weather!

On a side note, I may end up with different breeds of chickens than planned and from the feed store. The ones I really want I can't source locally, unless I do a feed store. I will still get the silkies and hopefully a cream legbar from the breeder nearby.
Sorry about your friend :(
Careful riding! It's supposed to get cold again tonight! Not too cold though..

I am looking for a good food to feed and have discovered that there is a LOT to choose from! I'd like to buy locally so ordering isn't something I want to do right now. Maybe open to that in the future when I have a better handle on how long feed will last.

D&L carries a brand by Coyote Creek Farm that is supposed to be good. Has anyone tried it?

The other feed store carries Bryant and Red River. NOt sure what organic they have. I won't shop at the third store. I don't like the guy that runs the place.
I'm going to switch once I move from chick starter. The D&L off of 380 carries it?
The one you don't like is off Chestnut, right? That guy's always condescending to me :/

You can get a fishy taste with flax, I believe. You won't get a fishy taste from a commercial feed, although I think I remember someone complaining that they got it with one of the Omega 3 feeds or supplements. If it happens, you just switch the feed or cut it with another feed. It's all about the concentration.
Flax seeds make the eggs fishy? I mix some with steel cut oats and soak them for a treat on chilly mornings. Should I lay off that? They're not close to laying yet...

I found out that there is a possibility of my being able to get a buckeye from the feed store. They are on a wait list for them. They guy that orders didn't know about the breed. He does now and was interested enough to order them in. :)

My day is improving. :)
D&L again? I've never heard of a Buckeye...now I'm going to have to look them up lol
Do you ever wonder how those chickens off Lousiana and Bradley are able to free range all day? Right by the road, with that fence? I'd be nervous ALL the time..They obviously do ok though..

Chicken's aren't legal there yet? I was going to rehome my roo to someone there...

I have 2 Silkies, but they're not really integrated yet...and they're the only bantems too...
By the way, I only counted 7 chickens..5 after you sell the extra 2. Our limit is 12 so....TECHNICALLY it's not too many

BCM's lay the dark brown eggs right? Hmmm.....I don't have any dark layers yet...

Well I took today off because I had a dentist appt. my hygienist wasn't working next week during my spring break. I thought I'd have a chance to see my girls-Katrina just got home from Baylor yesterday. As it turns out my oldest decided to take my youngest to the zoo today-that's what happens when all parties involved don't communicate. Lol
After my dentist appt u went home and was outside doing a few animals things when I noticed one of my rabbits was trying to hop but couldn't. He is very old and daily I wake up expecting to see him no longer with us. Well I called the vet but they have no one who works on rabbits there today, but I couldn't imagine letting him go even one more day not being able to hop. And he was continuously chewing on one of his legs.
So through many tears I made the executive decision to take him and have them put him down. Not a hard decision, because he has many issues. I know he is in bunny heaven and is able to hop, hear, and play with all the other bunnies. Throughout this morning I've been texting and calling Katrina to see if she wanted to have lunch. But never an answer. Well after I took the bunny to the vet I went to my OTHER daughters place of employment because I needed a hug. We cried and then I left to go home. Alone! I've got 4 kids!!!
I called Katrina because I surmised that she was sleeping and it was nearly noon and she needed to get out of bed.
We talked and I a
Skied her is she wanted to go eat and she said sure! So I told her to call me back when she was ready.
She called me back a few minutes later not because she was ready but because she was ditching me for a friend she hasn't seen in a while.
Oh well. I'm going to clean the bathroom, sweep and mop and go back to school at 3 to tutor. Then straight to babysit.
I'll kinda be glad when this day is done.

But I'm ok-kids will be kids and I'll always love them!

Besides I've got my chickens and 5 other bunnies!

:cd :bun

I think it is a matter of the ratio--if you feed a lot of flax seeds (I think it is flax), you can get a fishy taste. Makes me think it is related to the Omega 3 acids.

Brookshire11, I think most rehomed roosters go straight into the pot. I really believe you should eat the ones you grow out--why shouldn't you benefit from all that good food you gave them? The odds are any rehomed rooster goes straight to freezer camp and I want to make sure MY cockerels have a good death which doesn't always happen. I've seen enough completely botched slaughter videos on YouTube.

I'm so sorry :(

They probably don't get enough for me to worry about then. It's only a handful or so once a week between 8 birds.

I know most probably do, and I'm ok with that possibility.
But I don't think that's this guy's intention, from the way our conversation went.
I'm honestly not ready to slaughter anything quite yet. Plus he's only 8 weeks. Seems a little soon.
If he has a chance to live life a little longer with a little harem, I'll give him a shot!
Eventually, yes, I'll have to do something along those lines. Baby steps
smile.png

I will definitely be asking you for advice when I'm ready!

Laurie, look at this one!
