Texas

Dear Texas Forum,
I want to apologize to all of you for making you so Itchy.

I am ashamed to say that with this winter being so cold and so many health issues i was not at all vigilant about checking on the ladies for issues.:he

They got clean bedding fresh food and water but spent most of the time in the run and packed so much of the dirt I am sure now that they were not able to bathe properly. ( I thought they only used the dust bath to cool down like pigs and mud.)

I will be way more vigilant in the future and will make sure they have proper poultry bath houses from now on.

I want you all to know that if not for this Texas forum and the natural chicken one I would still be wondering instead of acting!

So as I am sorry for making you scratch :th

I am VERY GRATEFUL for the results.

Thanks so much
Jodi  :hugs

Hey you made us all be very aware of this issue so that's good. Besides what's a little itching among friends!!

Okay, so I did it. I moved them from the brooder in the garage to the coop.

When they first got in there they stayed huddled together like the boogey monster was going to jump out at any minute.

I took the advice of one of the members on here and purchased the 3 gallon metal hanging feeder from TSC. The top was open, so I also bought a large funnel to serve as a top and also keep the birds from sitting up there and pooping in the feed. I hung it with some barbless fence wire.

Here is a shot of the PVC\Chicken nipple auto-watering system. There is a black hose that goes out to the right that you can barely see. It connects to a 65 gallon rainwater barrel. I started filling the barrel with water and found a pin hole about halfway up. Not sure if I should try to fix it or return it and try another one. I'm thinking return, but danggit Sam's Club is like 28 miles away!
I concerned about the chickens figuring out how to use the chicken nipples. I put them in the coop around 5pm and still have not seen one bird try the waterer.

Yes....this is me checking on them every 30 minutes or so. First night without a night light and outside on their own!!! I'm kinda a nervous wreck, LOL!
WOWWW!!! It's SO beautiful! It is SO PRETTY that I'm compelled to write my very first post!! Bravo to you ClovisMan, for yours, is an awesome coop... and somewhere in chickenland, I am sure that Ms. KornKorn's agenda is considered an awesome "coup"

I am brand new to "fowl play"... I was adopted this last summer by an adult hen who just showed up in my backyard one day and insisted on me becoming a part of her life.... That was June 2013 and I've been literally "winging it" by following HER lead, the advice of my 2 cats, perusing at BYC, and random ideas fueled by adult beverages...

I don't know where it went Left......but that chicken...Ms. KornKorn... now comes and goes as she pleases thru my office window that I leave open for her all day. Her food bowls are in the kitchen next to the cat's bowls. She went from hanging out in the corner of the yard and sleeping in a tree at night to having a climate controlled spot of her choice...sofa, bar stool, top of file cabinets, or end of my bed. There are eight 3 week old chicks under a heat lamp in a storage bin, that I am ready to transition to a backyard coop I have built by "heart" and not by reason... Pics are to come...

First of all :welcome

Second, that is a hysterical story! You are a real trooper for letting ms kornkorn stay. And live IN your house. I'm not so brave-it's the poop thing I guess. I must say that here in Texas we have some real purdy coops-mine I just got off the internet. It was cheap and easy and it works! Congrats on the chicks! Where did you get them? And what kind?? I'm not set up for chicks yet so I'm living vicariously through all my friends on BYC.

Another Texan with the gift of humor. I love it! I loved your story too that is so sweet. I have found in my short time this is a sickness. No more are the days of my foremothers where chickens were suppliers of food only... Now they have become members of our family.
I moved my babies out to the barn in the brooder room for a couple of nights and I didn't sleep at all. I was up and down checking the temp and worrying my self sick so I made my family help me move them back into my house. A house that if you looked from out side you would NEVER dream I had a herd of chickens living in. Lol. They are going to buy me a cot for the barn when I move them out there for good.
My kids tell me I have chicken fever. Well I like the fever! Welcome fellow Texan! You will feel right at home here!
This is Facebook for chickens!

14 of them are Silver Laced Wyandottes, 1 is what I can only imagine is a white leghorn that the Hatchery threw in as a packing peanut, and there are 3 French Guineas in there somewhere. Thank you for the compliments.

Hey how did your night go? Did you get any sleep??
I saw a pic of the sliver LW lady night, I'm in love with those. They are on my to do list now!! So pretty!
