~~Ok, I think I am directly connected to the sun. The past few days that the sun has been shining I have felt so wonderful, but today I just can't get going. Just have they Yucks!! I did get my coop drawn out paper in 3D form for my hubby. LOL He should be impressed when he gets home. I decided to put the brooder and nests on the same wall beside each other. But that has been the extent of my energy.

My son came home from school, not feeling well so he has to go to the dr tomorrow. He walked in and I was in the room with my peeps AGAIN, he said is this all you do all day just play with the chicks. LOL I said of course and I have a special army of fairies that take care of EVERYTHING else around this farm so I can just play.

@ JellyBean, Brookshires, Mag...... Ok I am so sorry, I can't remember who all is in the Dallas area but I think it would be really cool if we got together one day. Like I said my hubby will be home this next week for a couple of weeks and I try not to go off when he is home. For every year we are married (almost 21 now) we only get to spend 1/2 of that year together so we take advantage of that time. So on his next 2 weeks away, I would love to come up and see ya'll. Check out your coops or what ever, go to the chick farm. We can make it a BYC meet! LOL What ya'll think???

They need to be shipped on day of hatch BEFORE they have had anything to eat or drink. Their metabolism is such that they can survive several days without food and water as long as they don't eat anything. There needs to be enough chicks, don't know the number but would think at least 6 to 10, to be able to generate enough heat. The seller should also by law have a certification to be free of Pullorum-Typhoid, but I don't think the post office ever check for that. There are special boxes for mailing chicks. The seller should be investigating how to get the chicks to you safely.
Thank you. I passed along the info. Shipping new fry seahorses is the same way. We can ship adult seahorses on an empty stomach. They go overnight though.

I'm in McKinney TX
Welcome! I'm in McKinney and so is Brookshire11. What part of the city are you in? I'm in the Historic District and Brynn is close by.

Never researched the mealworm thing too much but I do raise composting redworms. It's very easy. "Farm" is made from stacked totes. The bottom one is left as is, as it's there just to catch fluids that drain off (which if done right, there isn't much of). The next bin fits inside this one with holes drilled in bottom for drainage and holes around the top for ventilation. Lay a few wet sheets of newspaper in the bottom, then add a few inches of shredded newspaper, cardboard or leaves (mine uses all of the above). Add a little sand or dirt because worms have crops just like chickees. The bedding needs to be damp but not wet, like a rung out sponge. I add veggie scraps, crushed egg shells and coffee/tea grounds about once a week and more paper/cardboard/leaves from time to time. The cool thing is, when the tote is full, I leave the lid off and stack another bin on top of it and start over. When the worms work through all the material in the full tote, they migrate through the holes into the new bin. By the time the new bin is full, the bottom bin is practically worm free and ready to be harvested. Dump out your castings and restack. The two bins just keep rotating.

Ok ya'll I am loving the earthworm thing.... I can do them much easier than the mealworms. Yep I am really digging it.....

As soon as the coop is in working order, I am starting the worm farm. I don't have any kind of compost here yet so between this and the DL I should have that covered.

SEAhorses!! I love seahorses. I love to scuba dive and see them in the "wild" so to speak. My hubby and I have always wanted a wall type saltwater fish tank, but it has never happened. I am so impressed!!

Im just north of McKinney on the 543. On a little 3 acre hobby farm.
Which house? I cycle there all the time. Not so much lately though. Dang winds and weather! Do you know Tony? He is the one with chickens and dwarf Nigerian milk goats.

I'd love to live up in your neck of the woods. :)

Thanks :) I love saltwater tanks. I had to break mine down when we moved here a year and a half ago. There really isn't room for one in this house and with all the work this house and yard needs I just didn't have time for it. Seahorses are my favourites.

There is plenty I don't do too.... I do like to dabble though. :p

Ummmmm....they multiply just like hangers do....

Welcome from Rosenberg! Get ready to be enabled!!

Lisa :)
I finally got my hangers under control. ;)

Enabled? You think? On this site? Never! LOL!! Enabled may be an understatement!!!

I'm so excited to get my chicks next week. My brooder is lonely without chicks in it.

So the big Bobcat has been spotted on my property again. He is as long as my 80 pound black lab, but not as tall or stocky. Think he poses a threat to my Wynn-d's?

Both sightings have been on the back half of my property where the deer feeder is and not on the front half where we have the most human habitation. Maybe I'll put my game camera back up and see exactly where he is venturing off to during the day.
