Texas

I started just wanting 32 chickens now I have 2 turkeys and 10 chickens here already and the 36 that I ordered from ideal showing up the last of this month. Please don't support me with more chickens lol

I find myself in a quite similar situation. Figured ten would do. Bought 30. Hatching 14. Just set 30 quail eggs. Daughter is bringing home 15 to 20 from school. Looking into turkeys. I don't need support. I need therapy. Lol. I wouldn't take for my birds though. Love 'em. They are my therapy I suppose.

The burnt through grounds that almost caught my house on fire today.

Clovis- looks delicious!!!

Jelly - I'd definitely buy from you. I'm a Baker but hey, if I don't have to do it I'm not gonna!! Haha. John has a heavy sweet tooth.

As far as mereks, what they said. Do it the first 48 hours or it doesn't do you any justice at all... Waste of money. That's coming straight from the guy that does the testing when he was last out here.

Remember when I said it couldn't get worse? We had a ( tiny, TINY ) electrical fire today on the middle room. Which led us to an electrician, and the power company, finding aost a grand in repairs... Problem is we start demolishing this house and putting up the new house in nine months. We can't decide if we want to fix it or not... Fix it and find more problems, more money to sink into a house that changes levelsfrom the living rroom to the kitchen its so warped? I think not!! The r.v. we plugged in to move into so we could start demo on the old house was the problem. Our fire Marshall was nice and rude all at the same time. I almost started crying, but I was glad we were all safe and nothing fell apart completely. Heck, when I flipped the breaker to the power to the house I saved it from burning down to the ground completely. Go me!!

Puppies and chickens had a blast outside for the day though while they did the walk through. Look at these cuties...

I'm gonna be there looking lost and excited and hoping to find goats... Or more chickens.

LISA - Have you forgottom about rain? You remember water falling from the sky isn't the end of the world, okay? Its JUST RAIN!! Hahaha....

Good morning! OK, so I've been thinking about getting a few Silkies, or maybe Polish...I'd like to cross breed with my 'dottes and Ameracaunas..nothing too fancy, just fluffy. But I've been reading that they are a bit more "delicate" by nature, more prone to injury, being picked on by other chickens, etc. What's y'all's experience? And whats a good breed that might be more hardy? Standard size. Thanks!

Hey y'all! I am up in the Panhandle in Amarillo! Got my first chicks today. Mom brought my kids 4 unannounced so I was not prepared! But you know how we Texans can handle any situation! Gotta scramble and get some stuff to set up a brooder. I am not really a backyard chicken owner as I live in a rural area with 5 acres. I had planned on getting grown chickens because I want eggs now! Guess I will have to keep getting them from my neighbor for now! Bet this will light a fire under the hubby's rear to get that coop built! Lol

Welcome from Rosenberg!!! Definitely build your coop bigger. You can't help yourself when you start seeing all the little fuzzy butts and the pictures we put on here of different breeds will absolutely floor you!

But HEY, the wind isn't blowing today. My little ones stayed in the coop for most of the day. Right around dusk, the wind died down and they were able to come out and browse.

Hi ya'll!

I'm a newbie to BYC and chicken lovin but I'm totally head over heels in love with my girls and completely addicted to life with chickens! And I live in texas...so how much greater could life get??
1f609.png
im in Centerville and haven't perused all 900 pages but in the posts I saw I didnt see anyone very close to me.*sigh* But thanks to the world wide web I see I have lots of "neighbors" in the Texas chicken lovin club!

I have 6 laying hens and am adding 5 more (chicks) hens and a roo or 2 in the very near future. A very spoiled yorkie/chihuahua dog. 5 very wild children, 4 boys and 1 girl, 3 of them teenagers. And 1 exasperated husband.

Looking for a good farm dog/puppy to help herd kids/chicks/chickens and whatever other animal I can add without sending my DH over the edge! LOL poor fella.

Anyway, sooooo happy to have found ya'll!

Welcome from Katy, tx west of Houston! You've found a great site!!

I officially candled my first set of hatching eggs on Monday. I have one egg from home that still looks clear, so I will re-candle it today. One of the eggs I was questioning fertility on, had a ton of veins!
woot.gif
The shipped eggs all seem to be developing. There are 2 that I can't really see, the shell is so dark but we are working under the theory they are good too. The shipped eggs do have a few with saddle air cells so I'm going to try hatching most of them standing up in an egg carton, though I have awhile to really decide.

The biggest frustration is I took a vent plug out last night, I've read to leave them in for 10 days to cause a little stress. Now I can't get the temps to stabilize again. They were holding awesome until I removed the silly plug.
