Hi Pat,
Welcome to the hill country! We live in Granite Shoals but have an acre on the very dry LLano river in Kingsland. We have some friends who purchased 5 chicks from mobilechickencoops.com last spring and they are in love with the speckled sussex they purchased. They also purchased 2 buff orpington and 1 delaware that are very nice but if you want something that is everywhere you are, the speckled sussex are it. I think they are only medium sized birds but I think that they may lay large eggs. We have sex links (large egg laying machines), BBS Marans and an Ameraucana. They all do well in this weather.
Enjoy your new home and chickens,
Laurel
Hi Laurel and thank you for the welcome! I drive thru Granite Shoals at least once a week as I head to Marble Falls for shopping. And regarding the dry Llano River, the last time I was at Slab River Road, the river was almost gone! I was shocked!! I absolutely love this area and shudder to think of ever having to return to Houston for anything!!
Do you mind if I P.M. you with a couple more questions about the chicken breeds you mentioned? As this is my first venture with chickens, I want to be sure I start out on the right foot!
This morning I completed all the finishing touches on "The Hen Hut". As soon as I'm permitted by the forum, I post some pictures. The next boxes are ready, pine shavings on the floor with some DE sprinkled over them, the waterer with nipples, and the feeder ready to be filled. I'm almost more excited about getting my chickens than going on vacation!
I hope that doesn't make me a bad person!!
I hope you got some of the rain that fell yesterday. I think we might have received 1/10", but it was hard to tell since my rain gauge had spider and a cobweb in the bottom of it since it had been empty for so long!!
Enjoy the rest of your day....
Pat
