So glad you live 107miles away that way your to far for me to drive and get more chickens. So let me ask are they bantams or the regular size ?
And your to far away for sure but wish I had a few of those frizzled EE.
Harley Harley Harley....you knew I wouldn't be able to resist this post! 107 miles is NOTHING. If you want to go anywhere in Texas, you have to drive. You would be there and back in no time at all. Think about the frizzled EEs.....frizzled EEs....frizzled EEss.....

Aw man I did not need to see this, knowing you are right down the road from me, and me with 10 chicks already and 18 more coming next month, and with a coop that is big enough for about 24! I would love some EEs though. Hmm.... What to do!
I know...I know....I know....go with Harley and get some EEs.

Hi to all, I am new to BYC and chicken raising. I am in Allen Texas, about 30 miles N of Dallas. My coop is finished and my run will be in a couple week. Any suggestions on the best chickens to get for the extremes in temperature.

Hello and welcome all the new ones that joined. I been alittle busy last few days. I ended up with 16 chicks every time I give up on eggs a few more hatch out. Guess I will give it a few more days and see what happens lol. I took my dad to fort worth to see his dr cause he has infection in his neck where he had surgery we set there for a hour and they told us we had to come back cause dr was in surgery so I drove two hours for no reason. Errrr not a good day. But I hope who ever was in surgery made it ok. Now we are trying to get my dad in to see a dr over his neck cause he has puss coming out of it. That cant be good.
LisaT, I am praying for your Dad. Please keep us posted.

Ideal is having a call in special for white broad breasted turkey poults. The email is timed for early this morning and ship date of today, so I'm not sure if they have any left, 20 minimum I believe, but I thought I'd share!

Lisa,( Lisaterrell 88) do you have any of your Australorps and Ameracaunas for sale?...And where do you live?....I am in Goliad, Texas.....

I need incubator advice! And my 6 australop eggs look good, 1 hatched, 4 pipped so far. The hatched one pipped at wrong end, and with no help from me hatched!
So now for the advice, my dozen polish go on lock down Easter Sunday, the dozen Marans and Ameraucana go on lock down Tuesday. Is Monday an ok comprise, or would it be better to lock down all 3 dozen on Sunday? Or break lockdown on the polish to lockdown Marans and Ameraucanas?

I have found this concept floating around BYC of the need to "lockdown" to be a myth. I do not "lockdown" my incubators, I get in there when I need to and it has not negatively affected hatch rates. I pull chicks out that aren't even completely dry if I find that they are getting too rowdy in the incubator. The chicks do fine as do the eggs still trying to hatch.

Hens have been hatching eggs for centuries. They do not stick themselves and their eggs inside containers with strictly controlled humidity and temperature levels. And yet, chickens have survived all these years with very little human intervention, as have birds in the wild - without the aid of electricity to run incubators, or heat lamps, or even having people build them fancy houses.

Something to think about as you raise chickens and think you need to baby them so much.

Do you use an egg turner? Do you stop turning 3 days before hatch?

Do you use an egg turner? Do you stop turning 3 days before hatch?

Yes, I do use an egg turner. A hen turns eggs in the nest but I don't have the time to be going in and hand turning eggs multiple times a day for weeks at a time.

I take them out of the turner two or three days before they are due to hatch - depends on if I put eggs into the incubator several days in a row.

On rare occasions I have put eggs in every day for about 4 days - trying to get enough eggs to hatch at roughly the same time. In those cases, I stopped the turner on all of them when the first day's eggs were due to be stopped, but the eggs that still needed a few more days of turning got "turned" by hand. I would prop up one side of the egg carton they were in and switch sides that were propped up, a few times a day.

This year I tried a trick from more experienced breeders and put all eggs into cartons and left them there for hatching. I cut apart the cartons into "cells" of 4-6 eggs each, and cut the bottoms out of each individual egg section. Holes in the bottom of each egg compartment allow air to still circulate. When I took the eggs out of the turner, I put them all into the cut up egg cartons - large side up just like in the turner - and that was how they hatched. I found that my chicks actually came out of their shells faster than just laying the eggs in the incubator. I think it's because they have something to kick against because the carton holds the egg still, whereas just laying in the incubator loose, they end up rolling their eggs all over the place trying to get out because they can't get leverage.
